FYI - I got my rejection email today... :frown: I wonder if they send this to everyone or they sincerely mean that I was a "strong applicant"?

This email accompanies the University's official letter which will be sent to you in due course notifying you that we are unable to offer you a place for the MPhil in Finance.

You are one of a small number of applicants I am writing to on behalf of our MPhil in Finance admissions committee who were particularly sorry to decline your application.

The course has been very heavily over-subscribed, with many well-qualified people applying for each place. In fact, of the 89+ MPhil programmes run by the University of Cambridge, the MPhil in Finance attracts the largest number of applications. This is in spite of the fact that it is the only Finance Master's degree in Europe which asks for a first class degree or 3.7/4 CGPA as a minimum requirement for application.

This year, the number of offers that can be made across our programmes has also been capped, so we are unable to expand the number of places.

We have therefore had to reject many strong candidates such as yourself.

We wish you well in your future career.

Nena Nelson

No worries for me though, as so far I have got into Cass for MSc Quant Fin, with other applications still pending!

Goodluck to everyone else, congrats to those who got in... have fun xxx

I guess no person got rejected after receiving "recommendation for an offer".

George, I am really hoping you did not miss out an offer after the "recommendation". That would be extremely terrible. What other programs have you applied and which offers are you going to accept?

Thanks for your comments! Good luck to all of you too, where ever you may end up.

Anyone else receive that rejection email - My CamSIS still says 'under consideration by department' but I guess my reject letter will come in due course.. sigh.

Not sure if I will accept Cass, I would much prefer to get into LSE/Imperial (or HKUST). But those apps are still pending!

Take care all!

I ll send them an email to tell me exactly what s going on, because I m really nervous...If anyone was rejected when his status was "papers with degree committe" please tell me

I have also applied only to Msc Finance in Warwick and I have an offer from there..If they do not offer a place in Cam I ll go to Warwick, but the only bad thing with Warwick is that it is really expensive :s-smilie:

I doubt you will be rejected...you probably will get in..when did you status change to 'papers with degree committee'??

Reply 312

'Papers with degree committee' is not the same as 'Recommended for an offer'.

It just means what is says, the paper is now with degree committee for consideration. People have been rejected before at this stage.

It's only rare to get rejected if its says you've been recommended for an offer by the department and then BoGS rejects you. It happens but for rare reasons like not meeting cambridge minimum requirements, not providing satisfactory evidence etc.

Dumbdedumb is right. I know that in the very last phrase of the admission process, some people status will be changed to "papers with degree committee" with a further note "your papers are with the degree committee for consideration" (after your click the View button). This is indeed not the same as "recommended for an offer". From GraduateUnion, I could see people tend to be finally rejected in this situation.

George, you should be safe only if you have been "recommended for an offer". "Papers with degree committee" is not sufficient to secure an offer (yet).

yeah but since they sent out rejection emails yesterday and they have completed the recommendations to BOGS doesn't that mean he is most likely safe??? What else can it be?

My status just changed to application unsuccessful now :frown: Didn't even get an email about it. My options are now:

1.) MSc in Finance in Warwick (Conditional on a 1st).
2.) MSc in Quantitative Finance in Smurfit Business School (Conditional on a 2.1).
3.) MSc in Finance & Investments in RSM (After I do my GMAT and likely conditional on a 2.1)
4.) Do nothing and hope that I get a full time offer after my internship with Morgan Stanley this summer.

I really don't know what to do at this stage. Warwick is good but costs £22,500. Smurfit Business School is not nearly as good but I like the course, I can live cheaply at home and I will most likely get a scholarship which will leave the fees at only around €6000. RSM would also be decent as it is ridiculously cheap. Don't know if doing my GMAT at the end of May will be early enough to get my application in before the course is full though :s-smilie:

MSc in Finance from Warwick appears to be a very good choice. I have a close friend who did his internship (IBD) in Morgan Stanley 2 years ago. MS didn't offer any full time position to him at all despite the fact that MS rated him very highly and wrote him a strong reference letter. His academic result is quite competitive and graduated from a top 40 university in the world. However, since then he has not been able to join any ibank anymore. He told me MS internship was more like using people to do word processing and powerpoint preparation works.
