Cambridge focus less on uni and more on grades. They prefer someone who is in the top 2% of their class at a "good" uni than someone in the top 10% at Harvard.

Students in the top 2% at Harvard probably won't apply to Cam....

Getting first class yaddda yadda is great, but to be competitive enough to get an offer, your referee must state that you are in the top x% of your class, the lower the "x", the better is your chance.

Extra curriculars count for squat. I have horrible extracurriculars.

No, I still need to sit my 2nd year exams, but I'm realistically expecting 3 out of 4 firsts and trying very hard for 4/4 (mainly because then I'd be guaranteed to graduate with a 1st as long as I pass 3rd year exams with 40%).

I hope my posts don't make me sound like a douche, I'm genuinely curious as to the competitiveness of MPhil Finance (bearing in mind people from MIT/Harvard/etc might be applying).

Swayum, I get in this year, yet I'm from one of the big ten public school in US. I would say you have a very good chance to get in Mphil Finance if you are a top student from LSE and you have been taking a lot of math classes. Cam doesn't require GRE/GMAT as long as you can show you are a top student, with adequate academic preparation (math, stat classes), and interested in Finance!

Good luck!

Ah ok, thanks. I think I'll apply then and see what happens (provided I do well in my exams in the next 4 weeks!)

Hi Swayum,

Do you know anything about LSE's MSc Finance and Economics program? How do you think of it compared to this Mphil Finance at cam?

Thanks!

I have no idea really, sorry. If you're doing it for job prospects, both LSE and Cambridge are good. If you're doing it for education, I'm not sure really.

Hi all, I'm applying to the MPhil Finance programme and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on which college to apply for? I'm inclined to go by distance but would also consider applying based on "quality of life". haha.

Is the Finance & Econ. program a new one?

Reply 375

yes it is. only announced on may 2011. there seems to be a strict requirement of a strong background in economics (relevant modules in economics as a ug etc). i suppose its to prevent prospective mphil finance students without a first from "spilling over" to this course

Reply 376

sure. Its the same as the Fin&Eco Master at the LSE or in Warwick.

But as a economist I'm very interested...

Reply 377

definitely. the fin & eco programme opens doors to the finance discipline that is almost excluded at UG level. not sure if it'd improve employability but it will most certainly be helpful to increase academic exposure. btw, i think there's a post dedicated to this programme somewhere on tsr

Reply 378

Do you think this program is more competitive than the pure MPhil in Econ. ?

Reply 379

can't say for sure. mphil in fin & eco is a new programme, people may think its dodgy and all, but it DOES provide an easier pathway into the finance modules from judge business school, specifically/especially for eco ug students. my guess is that there'll be more applicants but they'd be accepted on the same basis as the straight eco mphil.
