We don,t have the number of people who received an offer

LSE Msc finance has almost the same stat that Warwick Msc finance

Warwick Msc finance 2323 (Application) 91 (enrolled) 3,9 %

LSE Msc finance 2346 (Application) 64 (enrolled) 2,7 %

What i mean by quality of applicant is that people egnerally would rate Cambridge finance course very high and useful if haven't done optimum research. So the applicants will be less as people will think they can't get in. Therefore only top people will apply Cambridge and hence although the rate is higher, it is actually more competitive. This is only hypothetical though. Just saying a statistic like percentage isn't everything.

i'm thoroughly agree with you...sure that the process to getting into oxbridge is by far more rigorous and though and merely student with high caliber apply

I agree with Ineedaplace, granted there will always be the arrogrant guy with a 2nd tier profile who will try to apply, but I would think that with Cambridge that's where every piece counts given the type of people who would think they are reasonably competitive to enter the program. Conversely, with Warwick I think it kind of skims on the quantitative side of things, which I think makes it a magnet for people with a lesser quantitative background.

Do you think I stand a chance?

Profile:
Vienna University of Economics & Business (Austria)
- BSc Business, Economics and Social Science (with major Operational Research)
GPA: 1,03 (1 = best, 5 = worst)
+
- LLB Business Law
GPA: 1,15

Work experience:
- 3 internships + a semester part-time at a fund of hedge funds advisor
- Research internship at the Austrian National Bank (housing market statistics)
- Internship in Banking & Capital Markets Division with Clifford Chance
- next summer I'll spend with Invesco in Boston in their trading department

Extracurricular:
- President of a faculty group of the European Law Students' Association
- Head of Financial Conferences in the Academic Project for Austrian & International Relations
- Participation in Harvard WorldMUN

No GMAT taken.

What do you think? Could it be possible to get in the MPhil without GMAT or not?

Vienna is a good European Uni. Your major is very nice to have. If marks in Australia are even remotely comparable to Germany your undergraduate marks and your Uni is good enough for a Top10 US PHD Program. I would say you'll get in wherever you want. Do the GRE, 800 in quant is quite easy and you don't have to care much about the verbal part.

Actually whats your career goal? Why do you want to do a Master anyway? I don't think a Master would add much value to your already good profile. If your goal is a PHD then do it directly.

Thanks for the advice :-)
Grading in Austria is pretty much compareable to the German system.

I think you have a good point saying that I should do a PhD straight away. The reason why I want to do an MPhil/MSc is because you cannot really focus on one area that much in Vienna. You can choose specialisations, but those are only 6 courses (in my case operations research with a focus on time series analysis) and the rest of the degree is very generalistic (not only finance courses, but also social science, management, economics, law).
Therefore, I thought I could strengthen my theoretical finance background before I have to choose a research area.

Another reason is that I did not have a lot of time lately, therefore taking the GRE would have been a problem. So I hope to get into Cambridge without the GRE, but I guess it will be hard, as I assume they do not know the Viennese university that well.

Once again, thanks for your advice. Hope we will all get in :-)...so what is your profile?

Vienna obviously ain't Cambridge, but it is known. Your grades are awesome+ the Harvard Grad Courses should help you a lot. I think you should be confident. But it's also always a bit of luck + your references have to be great.

My profile... I already did a Master (Warwick Msc Finance - distinction), now I'll be starting at an Investment Bank in London, but I am still quite interested in doing a PHD. I just did the GRE. I studied around 3 hours a day for 4 weeks and scored 800 in the quant section (and I was quite rusty at the beginning). Really nothing to worry about, but I think Cambridge doesn't care that much about it anyway.

eco 510 do you mind if I ask what experience you had before the masters? Also are you starting in FO at a bulge bracket?

Eco510 I have been offered a place in the Msc in Finance in Warwick, and I would like if you have the time to tell me please, if you are satisfied by your experience in Warwick. Moreover how easily did you find the job in the investment bank? Did your Msc from Warwick helped you a lot? Do you think that it is a good choice for me to accept this offer? The money is a lot, so I am not sure if I can earn the spended money in the near future if I accept the offer and have an Msc from Warwick. Do you think that this is possible? Moreover if you have any special tips about the Msc in Warwick that it is necessary for me to know please tell me, that will help me a lot to make a decision.

Thank you in advance

Hi guys, I'm new here.. I have been admitted to LSE's MSc Finance & Economics, but I prefer Cam's Mphil Finance for it's small class size... I read the threat for last year, it seems most offers are made at beginning of March...

Yeah I am quite satisfied with my experience. Warwick is a great Uni and a good place to study. In contrast to many other programs WBS offers 5 Modules each term as well as a Dissertation. Hence you tend to get more Lecture Hours for your money. The Curriculum is quite challenging due to the heavy workload. It is also relatively technical and academically rigorous. However I would have enjoyed a bit more choice. Another advanced Econometrics Module or some advanced Asset Pricing Module covering Stochastic Calculus would have been great (but that's probably just me). It definitely helped me find a Job, however the rest of your profile matters a lot as well. You cannot expect to do a Master and get a guaranteed great job. At least not within the current economic climate. I also know Said and Judge grads who had a hard time getting a Job. Whether it is worth the money is a very difficult question. I have been asking that myself, especially considering continental Europe is almost free...
For myself I can say now it was worth the money. I was lucky to get my dream Job. If I enrolled in a cheap German/ Suisse Master I would have saved tuition. However I would have wasted another year studying. Therefore the continental Master would have ended up more expensive...

btw @Ineedaplace no. It's MO at a US BB. Was mostly interested in risk. I was actually considering doing a PHD on risk (and I might reconsider this when I finish the grad program)

Seriosuly, all you camebridge applicants piss me right of
why should the best education go to the cleverest people? that makes no sence at all, surely the less clever people need better education to bring them up to a better standard
i didnt apply out of principal because of this but if id gone to a better primary and secondry school i might have had a chance

Awww, aren't you sweet
So you really think smart people should choose bad universities and less smart people should choose good universities and eventually they will all be mediocre? That makes no sense, not with universities, not with higher education.

Great! I guess we'll have to wait for an offer letter from the board, then wait for admission to a college...
