hi i was just wondering whether anyone goes there? i am thinking of applying well i'm sure i will. I'm interested in the application period for example what the interview is like and how good does the portfolio need to be. I was also wondering generally what its like.
thanks

i don't go there but i really wish i'd applied there instead of to my college for english :frown: there's a thread ----> http://www.oxfordgossip.co.uk/new/showthread.php?t=1989 about it over at oxgoss, though most of the posts in it are kindof mean.

http://www.ruskin-sch.ox.ac.uk/ The Ruskin is part of the University. I'm afraid I don't know anything about it, but see http://www.oxfordgossip.co.uk/new/showthread.php?t=1134 for a thread on this last year. Also http://www.oxfordgossip.co.uk/new/showthread.php?t=1133 She got in.

the progressive outlook of the Ruskin is sometimes the cause of criticism, but it’s an outstanding department (both in terms of staff and reputation) and its experimental approach shouldn’t be a hindrance to those that want to do well there. And those that don’t are hardly winning medals doing so. I hate all the ****ing philistines who censure its role in the university. lighten up. in a few years we’ll all be scattered atoms anyway; just do what most interests you. if it's fine art, great.

oh, and also. i've heard the studio hours are quite involving for anyone that thinks it's an easy BA Oxon.
I certainly dont consider art to be an easy BA or anything of the kind, and Ruskin hs a fine reputation to be sure, but I'm always wary of art students who want to study there because its important not to confuse the reputation of Oxford University and the Ruskin: in the art world, it will matter that you went to the best place for art (i.e St martins, Chelsea, etc) as opposed to a place which has a great academic reputation. Again, I'm not saying dont apply, or that its a bad place, but be aware the London institutions are generally more respected for art for a whole host of reasons.

that is true and it isn't. don't get me wrong, london has a phenomenal import. but given that most (serious) ruskin graduates go on to the top postgraduate courses in london anyway, it's certainly one of the most revered places to study at undergraduate level. in many respects it's strange to be so dislocated from london (which is teeming with galleries, artists, dealers, tutors etc.) but the ruskin (as a top london artist/tutor once told me) has assembled some of the best staff in the country in one place, capped by richard wentworth who was behind much of the teaching at goldsmiths that spurred the yBas into action. the fruit of an oxford reputation certainly have a different flavour, but still there are fruit. even for fine art.

so yeah, you're right. (but also wrong)
