The Student Room Group

I cannot digest/understand what I read, when I read.

So, I have politics reading to do, and im sitting there trying to read it, but nothing goes into my head! It's frustrating because, next morning i go into class and my teacher will be like "Sonia, could you please tell the class what you read about yesterday night for homework" and it's like..ughh.
Even in class, we have to read, and it does not go in to my thick azz head.
And, then, when I have to revise, it takes much longer, and me having to repeat.

Anyone else have this problem? because, sometimes in class i just feel as if it's just me, as others are able to summarise what they've read etc :frown:

how can i solve this? what can i do to help me understand what i read?

also, when having to revise and sit down at my desk to do some work, i always start procrastinating. This is what i did for AS, I would think "ohh, im a night worker* and then just be on tsr, youtube, till it's like 11 etc and then try and do work, and then just start doing other stuff and then i ended up getting bad grades, because i didnt revise for anything, as i would procrastinate till 12, and so on, till like 4, when i had to cram cram cram for exam( i got CCDD, having to resit in jan for uni requirements of AAB) how can i revise!

people, i need some hope. Anyone who's like this but got them selves to work their azzes off? :frown: and also help about the reading too

Im kind of the same with the reading, in class when we read something I find myself having to quickly try and re read it like 10 times in case I get asked a bloody question cos it just won't go in.. I find the best way for me to take something in is after the lesson try and write notes in my own words of what we went over, reading does nothing for me but writing it out helps it go in  Im afraid I can't offer advice for the procrastination as im not much better myself.. lol

things I do includes underlining the key concepts and also reading sentence by sentence

perhaps your problem is more motivation rather then an inabillity to digest info?

I was lucky! and apart from history there not the most demanding subjects. All I can say is make sure you do some practice papers and look at the mark schemes so you know what examiners are looking for. Also I didn't do any revision at home.. just at school during my free periods. Just when you have some free time at school go over the lesson quickly and write some basic notes so you hopefully take it in, then hopefully you wont have to cram it all in later on

Take notes as reading.

Take notes as reading.

But, then I wouldnt even remember what notes im taking, id have to look at them anyway

I draw pictures...it works. I also form humourous images in my head somehow alluding to what i'm trying to remember, and it usually does the trick.

At AS I got bcdd so I went out and bought good text books and read around the subjects, forcing myself to concentrate and I made out lots of posters with pictures on them to help aid my memory. In the end I got BBBd. It's not fantastic in comparison to others on here, but it's what I needed.:s-smilie:

Still good..

I'm like that. Though I'm dyspraxic so that might be why.

Sorry I'm confused, I thought these were the grades you had to get for uni. Doesn't matter...

exact same problem here. I'll just note in class, try not to get the teachers attention, get home on my comfy desk and read everything to myself 100 times  but when it comes to quick class practicals in the labs i try my hardest to listen, but my mind always ends up somewhere else, i wonder why?...

my advice to you is to try and drink more water, it may help you. if the problem persists, get some special help from someone with experience like your teachers, or maybe parents. not sure if other pupils would be able to aid this. good luck

I find that after reading a paragraph or two, it helps me concentrate if I try to remember what the book was going on about and say it in my own words.

Are you getting enough sleep/drinking plenty? Tiredness usually brings this sort of stuff on.

Reply 17

Thanks for the advice... I find reading and revising hard too and with law I reeeeaaallllly need to read :frown:

Reply 18

Some good advice above,
maybe reading out loud can help you.
Take it in chunks & try to focus entirely on what you are reading, maybe your mind is wondering off too often.
Easier said than done.
Happy Reading:biggrin:

Me being a science student , I always have tried to read some outside politics/business articles and stuff like that just for general knowledge in that area. But I never seem to grasp the concepts as easily as the physics/math stuff I read at school. It may be an issue with interest maybe?

Going for study methods - i have never studied a table ( always kneel at the bed and use it as a table ) I found that position more comfortable and it makes me concentrate easily.Try a more comfortable studying position.

Also try pacing around while reading the book. I learn 60% of the material while pacing around so much that my legs sometimes hurt the next day. But its an efficient way to get stuff into your head in a short while. It keeps you more alert. My day-before-exam crams go like this :
pace around with book - drink of water ( maybe even browse the Internet in the process for 10 minutes) - pace - repeat ... lol weird I know. :P
Try this method !
