if you want big muscles then use heavy weights but if you just want to look muscular use smaller weights and repeat more times.

Use weights for the muscles...to do what?
for the muscles dude! for the muscles!!!

To build the muscles up. You may be naturally muscular, imasillynarb, but other people need to work out.
Either that or you believe that if you become anorexic, muscle definition is improved.

you have fast twitch fibre and slow twitch fibre.

depends what you mean by toned

if you use heavy weights for short amounts of time then you'll build up fast twitch muscle, and end up looking like 100 meter sprinters. (power)

If you do lighter weights for as long as you can until you are really exahusted then you will build up slow twitch muscle, and end up looking like 5000 meter runner. (endurance)

Naturally muscular? I've spent hours and hours in the gym to get my puny muscles :frown:

No point lifting weights unless you know what you're doing, so if you want to improve definition just lose some fat, and in the case of anorexia people consume very little calories which breaks down muscle as well as fat, so they end up being having hardly any fat and hardly any muscle.
what i found helps is to keep your muscles tense...all the time. Say your driving to work or something, sit in a position that your abs are tight..rock it back and forth, almost like your constantly doing a "sit-up". I've done karate most of my life (9 years now) and my abs are like rocks. Do slow defining motions. Say for instance a push-up. Go down slow, come back up slow. Go down slow, etc etc. when you start to get tired, reposition your hands and work a different muscle group. If you want your arms to have definition, work your triceps first. this is where you have to get the most defining cut. If you have this...the rest just falls into place. Hope this helps...

mens health is generally full of crap.. instead get this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0736041850/qid=1128100340/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_27_1/026-0933786-2884464
it goes through each bodypart and shows a step by step guide of how to do certain execises and how your muscles are working, just read the 5 star reviews..

also get some advice from muscletalk.co.uk another way to start would be to read this excellent article for beginners http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do;jsessionid=31420A82F93E2B173933FEE0D5D442CB.hydra?id=640350

work out with weights i would assume, although sports go a long way to giving you general (and natural) toning
You can spend 24/7 in a gym doing weights which will get you no-where if you eat like a Girl. The correct diet + weights = progression.

That is so true. My friend pays £30 membership to living well, he goes 4-5 times a week, for 3 years. He eats like a girl, so i havent truely noticed a difference. His idea of increasing protein in his diet is a bag of cheese for lunch, but only that :p: ! I don't need extra protein as my mum always cooks meat for dinner, well most of the times. The downside, i may end up with bowel cancer however eating alot of fiberous food makes it pass through so much easier.

I'm a slimmish guy yeah, but I look muscular because Im slim and don't go for the Arnie look, just work on the abs and the pecs by sit-ups and press-ups, and smaller dumbells.

i thought your muscles wont grow anymore if you dont increase the weight of the dumbell??

like if you are using a 5kg, once your muscles get used to that weight, you need to increase to 6 otherwise there wont be any difference??
