I applied to oxbridge and didn't have a problem... I've heard some stories of ppl slagging Bristol for doing this, but as far as I know they're just stories!

They do get pissy, however, if you put them as your insurance

I applied to both.

Oxford, being the absolute ****s that they are, rejected me. Bristol, however, said yes

I'm fairly certain that Bristol have no way of knowing. After all, Bristol had accepted me even before my Oxford interview.
Unless Bristol could tell from from my application form that I wasn't a strong enough candidate for Oxford

Haha, same here Bristol were the first to get back to me, before I was even given an interview date at Cam!!

That's definitely not true  They often give out offers before interviews start, anyway.

Make sure you get your application in as early as poss - that way, it looks like you have just been well organised... if you put in your application the day before the Oxbridge deadline (Oct. 15th???), it will look bloody obvious and you might find yourself in trouble.

I've heard a rumor that bristol regularly rejects applicants who apply early to uni. as they suspect that you've applied to oxbrigde. Do they actually get pissy about that or is it just a rumor, as i want to go to bristol just as much as oxford...

I think thats complete rubbish, everyone I know who applied to oxbridge and bristol got offers from bristol.
Oxbridge are %$(*ing %$#@ &^$#ing @#!&)^% anyway! T'is fact.

Some of us aren't quite so bitter (*is aloof*) but essentially what our geordie friend means is that Bristol is just as good as Oxbridge anyway, it just isn't organised as a collegiate system.

look many aspects of bristol are much better in my opinion, i just really like the idea of colleges. That's why i'd maybe put oxford before bristol. Just out of curiosity, do you guys know about how competitive bristol is for maths + physics.

I agree with the first part, thats what i did this year.

Second part: no idea

really couldn't say, the best way to tell is usually the subject leaque table. Look at average grades of succesfull applicants etc.

As for applying early, i applied before the oxbridge deadline and got an offer. Not that i applied for oxbridge anyway.

That would be a really silly basis for rejecting people.

All uni's i imagine are keen not to offer places to people likely to reject them, but there is in fact no way that bristol can know if you applied to oxbridge.

Surely denying offers to people who applied to oxbridge would be counter productive anyway. Because its in Bristol's interest's to get the best people that it can. People who just missed out on oxbridge places for example.
I applied for oxford and bristol, bristol was the last uni i heard from though, quite a few weeks after i'd been rejected by oxford. Im really glad i didnt get in though, Bristol has so much more to offer and a degree from bristol is just as highly regarded as one from oxbridge and you can probably have more fun and get more out of your time at uni whilst your at it, (instead of just work, work, work)
ps i have a friend going to cambridge and they have been really arsey with him about leaving the uni during term time, to visit home, mates etc..

definately not true, if bristol do not offer you a place they will have better reasons than a student having oxbridge as one of their 6 uni choices.

I recieved an offer from both Oxford and Bristol, and bristol was the first uni to give me an offer... so in conclusion i think that people read too much into the application process.

I had to get my two cents in somehow so here goes: I was FORCED to send my application off the very same day UCAS opened (1st September) last year, not because I'm keen but as I was a choral scholar applicant for Cambridge and they hold their auditions at the end of the month. If anything, that would've been the clearest signal to Bristol that I was an Oxbridge applicant (as well as the fact that half my personal statement was about music when Arch&Anth was my chosen subject). Anyhoo, Bristol got back to me with a fabby offer before my academic interview with Camb. so I doubt that they are really that discriminatory. It's a lot better nowadays that each institution can't see where else you have applied but I doubt they'd reject you just for applying to Oxbridge.
Just to be bitter, I got accepted as a choral scholar and then POOLED! Seriously, I spent nearly a week and a half of interviews and auditions in that stinking hole for them to keep me waiting for another month. B stards.

I'm starting physics at Bristol this year, and it seems like a good place to me - definitely in the top ten in the country. It's quite a big department (I think), the 'vibes' seem good, its got good scores for teaching/research etc. Also, the course is more flexible than most other unis (you can do year in europe, year in industry, open units etc). I don't really know what Bristol's like for maths...but I presume its more-or-less the same.

If I'm being totally honest, if Oxford had accepted me, I would probably have gone there. However, I wasn't really that bothered because all of the universities I visited were more-or-less comparable. Don't worry too much about people going on about reputation because, most of the time, they're talking a load of rubbish. Oxford is a very good uni...but the gap (if there is one) really isn't that big.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about making a final decision just yet. Apply to both Bristol and Oxford, go to the open day/interviews and see which place you like most.

you see, my shot at oxford is very low (due to poor igcse grades) so i doubt if i'll even get an interview, but i feel i must apply (so don't try and change my mind  ) I do however really want to go to bristol, so its not really a matter of final decision, but more "will oxford close bristol's doors on me".

LukeD, how do tutorials work in bristol btw. I think i'm a person who would benefit massively from them.
okay...im not sure how true this is, but apparently, although uni's can't see where you have applied, they can see as soon as a uni offers you a place, rejects you etc. Or at least this is what i was told as one of my freinds got an offer for oxbridge, and as soon as she did this and it appeared on ucas a couple of the others rejected her (as they know that oxbridge would be 1st choice)..or at least this is what my bio teacher told me.
