Phobia of being sick

Does anyone else have a real phobia of sick? I can't stand it and it is beginning to rule my life. I like things very clean, avoid certain foods like shellfish incase of illness and build myself up in a state if I think I may be sick. I have been like this for many years. I had food poisoning last year and I wasn't even that bad when I was actually being sick - it's just the thought and anticipation.
I'm off to uni next week and am really looking forward to it except for this problem.

I hate people being sick! It's really gross, if people even retch I have to run off. Although being sick when you are drunbk is completely different than when you just chuck it. I've got alot better with being sick, I've only been sick once since I was five. Well i was sick about 7 times but it was all at once really.

Yeap, Emetophobia. Im not as bad as you, But i have a constant fear of throwing up. I havent in years and doubt I ever will as its just way to traumatic for me. No idea why Im like this - I think it triggered when I ws little and got sick with constant vomiting. Im not to bad with food, I jsut always make sure I moderate myself and know what levels I can get to before I may throw up.

wow, no i dont have a fear of it. infact when im feeling sick like really sick, i want to throw up cos i feel so much better afterwards. id rather be sick than feel sick.

I hear drinking excessive amounts of alcohol cures that problem.

the phobia? or the sickness?

Yeah, i have that problem...i don't know which is worse, being sick myself or someone else being sick...i get complete neurosis about being around ill people or going somewhere with someone who gets travel sick (sounds really harsh i know). Mind u, i've managed not to be properly ill for nearly 7 years so i'm happy for the moment...

I hate they way people make themselves sick! It really grosses me out. I can't even put my fingers in my throat. In fact if I cough too much near a toilet I actually retch and am almost sick.

yeah I hate the build up to being sick also sometimes when I eat a banana I feel sick instantly then it goes away

have you thought about trying therapies such as hypnosis/ behavioural theraphy ect it might help and it cant make things worse i dont think it would be better if you could sort it all out or at least learn techniques for helping you cope and try bach flower remedies i use the rescue remedie which calms me down but there might be one specifically for your phobia.

hey im new here

I think I have the same problem :frown: mainly feeling sick (or sometimes physically) in the morning, particularly after a nights drinking, but that's got much better now. I also used to be really ill at parties, even without drinking at all, but that hasnt happened at recent parties, but i dont think its gone away :frown:

I have a busy weekend ahead of me and im so nervous about being ill i'll probably make myself ill :frown:

hey..

as someone already said it's called "Emetophobia". Apparently, it's actually quite common; i don't know how bad you are or anything, but here's a link that you might find useful :

hope this helps you.

That's really strange. there is a mediacal term for that. It's not hypochrondriac is it? I don't think it is.

You're being silly!

People like you have spent too much time thinking about these things, to get rid of this phobia, you MUST go and spend a day lieing and playing in the mud.

Admire the world's natural beauty. Cleaniness is a sense of the mind, hence does not exist.

I have the same terror. I don't eat meat now. I don't think I'v thrown up since I was about 11, but the idea terrifies me. Needless to say, I'm not really enjoying all the people puking during Fresher;s Week!

Following a bout of gastro enteritis I suffered from this phobia.
Now, a mere 10 years later, I am over it.
I thin it is to do with recognising that vomiting is simply the bodies way of trying to get rid of things nasty to it and the sooner the nasty is gone then the better I will feel. Be that real illness or too much alcohol
