Usually it's with the microchip upwards and at the front.

So I'd be inserting it with the security number side facing me?

No, you need the raised numbers facing you. There are usually even little pictures on ATMs and Chip&Pin machines to show you which way round it goes...

No the security number is usually on the back of the card on the signature strip.

The chip should be on the front of your card. When you put the card into the machine the chip should be facing upwards and it should be the side closest to the chip that goes in first.

I can't read the word inserting without thinking rude thoughts.

And i realise this statement is of no use whatsoever to you.

 At this stage, saying putting it in the machine wouldn't really be a better alternative would it...

Thanks everyone, I feel like a prize fool right enough.

I always put mine in the wrong way  as long as you don't force it it should be fine

Rule of thumb: silver side of the microchip facing up, on the far side of the card from you.

If you give me your card and your pin, I'll be glad to do it for you

Oh okay, that's alright then.

(For the lulz: I accidentally cut up the wrong bank card this morning after receiving a new debit card.)
