UK unis with the best gay nightlife (clubs + bars)

I'm planning to study psychology next year at university, and I was just wondering if anyone knows and can give me a shortlist of the best unis for a gay nightlife please?

I'm more interested in big clubs and not so much little pubs but I guess I shouldnt be fussy

I'm currently most interested in (but not exclusively) UCL, bristol, birmingham, sussex, surrey, southampton, royal holloway and leeds

Thanks for any replies!

I think any major city will have a decent number of gay pubs and clubs. You shouldn't have any problems in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds or Southampton.

But Newcastle, well known for its nightlife, has a fast developing gay scene.

It's located around what is known as the "gay village" or "Pink Triangle" part of the city. It's fairly central and compact. There's Rockies, possibly the oldest gay club in the region, and is said to be rather "cheeky" with strippers and pole dancing nights.

Other venues include the Eagle which I don't think is an exclusively gay venue but is particularly popular with the gay community. It is a bar spread over a few floors (three I think) with a "men's only" basement ie. bottom floor.

Switch and Heaven's Above seem to be quite popular with students.

There are probably about 20 pubs or bars in particular which are either hardcore, exclusive gay bars or are just a little different, alternative type places and appear to attract a large number of the gays :p:

See this site for more info. There are more pubs and clubs but it should give some basic information.

I have only ever been to the agy parts of Manchester and Brighton and both are good. Canal street (Manchester i good)

southampton has a small scene and I reckon there's nothing to speak of in Guildford(surrey).
Also consider Newcastle and Manchester, Newcastle is fairly decent and Manchester is amazing, my favourite place by far. Im not a fan of brighton or london but obvs they are very gay places.

Also stonewall has a university guide you might want to look at http://www.gaybydegree.org.uk/

That sounds great actually, and Newcastle is pretty good for psychology too!

Decisions, decisions.....

Lol, why be gay (no offence) when girls are so nice?

Reply 11

Brighton and Manchester.

Reply 12

Manchester!
Canal Street, google it :p:
We have the biggest gay parade in the world every year, believe me the nightlife can even surpass that.

So I think Surrey is pretty much out of the question and Manchester, Leeds & Newcastle are now in the question. Sucks that Manchester is 67 on the guardian league table though :/

Sussex is next to Brighton so thats pretty good.

Are you puzzled as to why 90%+ of girls are straight too?

Just out of interest where are you now and why do you hate it?

I agree, Manchester is such a good uni but for some reason its only ranked 67 on the guardian league table, but I'm not sure if league tables are much to go by anyway.

Not being high and mighty (I'm going to Brighton...), but it's really not something you want to base your degree decision on. Any large city will do (London, Brighton, Bristol, Manchester etc.) and if you've got the grades to get into UCL, don't squander them.

It's a shame you're not looking at Manchester. Canal Street is superb for a night out.
