I never had to pay for anything but for lessons - the test I booked myself and was £62. your instructor sounds dodgy

I had to pay £50 for the hour lesson before the test and then the use of the care for the 40 mins of the test. I thought it's pretty standard procedure. It said in my progress booklet it'll be £50 for the hire of the car on the test, and all my friends I know who were with different instructors all had a similar charge.

Sounds dodgy to me. You def need to make sure your car is insured for the test though, you have to sign something before you sit the test to say it is. My auntie took her test (many many years ago) in an uninsured car, crashed in to a kerb and the tester claimed it gave him whiplash and sued her. Cos the instructor had no insurance, she ended up in court trying to sort it all out, costing her a lot of time, money and stress.

Perhaps his insurance only covers him driving and students driving whilst he is in the car, hence the charge to insure the car for your test when you're alone with the examiner

its not for insurance.. its for the extra time it takes on test day.
