    hey all
i'm thinking of applying for Spanish courses at uni next year and up until today it seemed pretty much straight forward when it came to choosing the course (choosing the uni was another kettle of fish mind u). anyways, i've noticed that the sanish courses have quite a bit of literature in them, initially this didnt bother me but after recieving some spanish novels today i am seriously concerned. im not a massive fan of lit in general but this really bites the biscuit. i was looking to do something that focusses more on the language. any ideas what course could potentially suit me??
    thanks in advance ppl

Have a look on the uni websites for module lists. Also, find out which modules are compulsory and what the optional (if any) ones are. I thought similarly to you and didn't want too much lit. I wanted it to be my choice!

If you can't find them, post your uni preferences here & I'll have a look for you.

Ok, I'm off out at the mo' but when I come back I promise I'll find out for you. I got an offer from Notts and Manc but don't think I looked into the lit. thing until after I'd had my offers...

    I'm back!

Cardiff - in year 1 you must study 'An Introduction to Spain and Spanish Texts'. Nothing else seems lit based. In year 2, literature isn't compulsory but it is an optional module. In year 4, literature isn't one of the compulsory modules, however you must pick 3 out of 4 optional modules, one of which is lit.

Here is the link and you can click on the different years on the left: http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/euros/degre...ar1/index.html

Nottingham - ok so if you want to do Spanish at Notts, then you must also do Portuguese for at least 2 years too. You only have compulsory lit modules in year 1. The link: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/ugstudy/...hp?code=000675

Manchester - Here's the link for a course, I don't know which one you'd rather so I picked the first one: http://www.llc.manchester.ac.uk/subj...se/?code=00249 The modules link is at the bottom right of the page and if you did want a different course, then click the 'undergraduate courses' link on the left.

KCL - Here's the degree structure: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/schools/humanit...structure.html and then here's a link for the module list - http://www.kcl.ac.uk/schools/humanit...ts/ug/modules/

Ermmm.... so what is it you want from your degree (other than not to study literature) of course? Think about what you want from the uni too. Look at the options you'd have for your year abroad too. Also check the interests of the lecturers. Why do you want to study Spanish, what is it about it that you love?

    I forgot about Liverpool - http://www.liv.ac.uk/study/undergrad...-hons/modules/

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Send off for some brochures and see what you think.

    Hi!
I did Spanish at Leeds Uni and got through the whole 4 years without taking any literature modules! They usually have loads of other modules you can take like history, culture, politics etc. Think you can see the current modules offered on the Spanish and Portuguese department website. Hope that helps!
