Backpack if you want to look like a dorky schoolkid, or creepy nerd who probably masturbates to manga and carries his comics around with him.

    Messenger bag if you're normal.

There this mentality in some parts however that messenger bags make guys look effeminate - for some reason... Why the messenger bag?

How many books are you carrying around? Using a messenger bag to carry 10kg will hurt...well, it hurt me! I used a backpack.

And, no one is going to pay you out for using a messenger bag or a backpack. I don't think anyone actually cares! Use what is more comfortable, or you'll be regretting it when you've got back problems.

depends how much you have to carry...
a messenger bag over filled and weighing a ton is not cool.... then it is better to have a backpack...

I use a backpack for 'heavy book days' and a satchel (a 1960s leather one) for lighter days.

If it's a nice backpack it doesn't look like you're a 'dorky school kid' - just someone who doesn't want to get shoulder pain. Try Jansport or Eastpak.

Messenger bags are just more fashionable, they don't look wrong when wearing them with casual/fashionable clothing, whereas with backpacks you look like you are backpacking or you're on an adventure holiday.

I just carry notes and a pen, sometimes the odd book or two. My laptop if I need it.

Backpack... Not giving yourself backache/shoulder ache wins. (If you have to carry books/laptop/gym stuff...)

Sounds like you need one of these.

    But avoid narrow doorways.
