I'm not convinced the UK system was ever that way. The A* was introduced only a couple of years ago to help out the unis who were struggling to differentiate between the vast number of students who were getting A's. Admissions Tutors are used to looking at the whole application, not just the grades.

From hearing about the applications/offers of friends, the unis are still asking for and getting students with very high grades. Its not that they're dropping their standards for the sake of some ideal profile, they are just looking for something to supplement the academic achievement.

I think I agree with this. My limited exposure to the UK system is this year's application cycle and lengthy, intense conversations with tutors at Oxford and Durham. What I like about the system is what appears to be a very clear hurdle regarding academic achievement--once met, both Oxford and Durham are looking hard at other characteristics with the requested material so that they can differentiate and make difficult decisions. Edinburgh and St Andrews seem to behave differently and I could easily guess they are eager for my int'l money rather than my academic prowess.

Durham has been very upfront with me about how they only have 70 places for roughly 1000 home/eu applicants for Combined Honours--they'll make less than 150 offers to secure those 70 students. No such quotas exist for int'l applicants and Durham is eager to get more North American candidates--I don't know why but I think they might be looking to Oxbridge and seeing roughly 2-3x the number of undergrad applicants and they want to raise Durham's brand awareness--which should lead to a higher value degree . . . eventually.

Anyone heard for Natural Sciences??
(sorry for being lazy and not checking the thread since its kinda long :P)

Yeah, I got an offer a couple of days ago. Still don't know about which college, though I applied to Castle. Quite pleased about it, it's probably going to be my insurance if Bristol don't give me an easy offer.

I totally agree that people will have to work out if a degree will be worth it...but completely disagree with your analogy, sorry!

The way UK fee loans are done is that repayments are made in the form of a graduate tax...9% of your income over £21k (for students starting in 2012).

So if you graduate and become unemployed/earn under £21k for any period, you stop paying off your loan.

If you haven't paid it off after 30 years, it's written off.

So there isn't a risk element in you not being able to pay it back and the bailiffs coming round to take your TV...just the opportunity cost risk of your degree not giving you an advantage compared to you starting work at 18.

As a UK consumer of HE, you are right on the mark and the incentives (no risk if you make less than £21k and goes to £0 after 30 years) don't make my arguments invalid, they simply shift to the taxpayer who is now saddled with a decision you the consumer got to make for your sole benefit. Shouldn't a Classics degree from Durham cost less than a Biochemistry degree from Durham? And what about a degree from Oxbridge, shouldn't they be more expensive than a degree from 'Uni of Marlow'?

BTW, congrats on your offers - well done!! I hope you enjoy your studies in the UK.

Regarding the money issue, I think that some unis are now so desperate for money from International students, that they are lowering their standards. A top 5 law uni that (from all available evidence to me) has never before accepted a law undergraduate (Home or International) with less than 6A*s at GCSE recently made my friend (an International applicant - although is studying in the UK) who had 1A*, 4As and 3Bs, an offer. LNAT could have been perfect, but I doubt it. I am happy for my friend, but it made me lower my estimation of that particular uni. My friend has all her offers now - conditional IB 36-39. 3 of those unis are TOUGH to get into, and all 5 are all in the Top 10 for law.

I can understand International students getting their decisions promptly. That is only fair as it will give them more time to make the necessary preparations to semi-emigrate. I can also understand a uni preferring an International student who has the same or very nearly the same academic attributes as a Home student - because their perhaps different perspective, experience and culture might add more to the richness of the University in general, and not to forget, they will pay more. What I cannot seem to understand though, is a uni that makes an offer to an International student when a Home student at least 2 times more academically qualified (if not even 3x, 4x etc.) would have definitely been rejected if there were no special circumstances involved.

Thank you. I don't have any idea if I would be a viable home/eu candidate or how exactly my grades translate or if they would get me over an initial hurdle; but I am thankful that my place at Durham is not offered to me at the expense of any home/eu candidate---though we could test that: if home/eu candidates had an option to switch to overseas fee status. Quickly we'd see that money would afford the rich an unequal footing and suddenly we'd be scrambling to find ways to equalize opportunity.

Oh nice! Congrats. I got university college for law as well. Will you be firming it?

I would go to the open day, but I'd be coming from the US--and can't justify the cost in a plane ticket to go for just a few days.

Yay! Well done to you too- but fair enough about the whole ticket thing. Just have to wait until autumn to meet you haha, provided grades etc. goes according to plan. Almost definitely firming it

My parents even said they would pay for the plane ticket, but they were like...you can either use it for the open day or to travel. I went with the latter. I'm most definitely going to be firming Durham as well!

Yes it is magical. It's like undescribable. I applied Castle even though I've got 0 chance of getting in lawl. Where did you apply and for what course?

Hatfield for the MMath. I kinda like the idea of being the best you can, but i hear there's a lot of stick against people who go there... Meh.

Likewise, don't worry though..if they reject us, we'll just shank them. With lambs.

'If' They reject us. When they reject us.
What college/sixth form do you go to in Essex, i might know it ?

Anyone here with a History offer that doesn't have eighty bajillion A*s at GCSE? No? Didn't think so. . . I wish Durham would just hurry up and reject me so I can choose a Firm and Insurance University. The wait is driving me crazy!

cool, I'm afraid I don't know the school.. I was hoping other schools there would ring some bells but they don't.

I'm half american half english but I've never lived in either place (except for being born in New York but I wasn't there very long), my dad worked with the UN so I've moved around alot. I'm looking forward to being in the UK though. Whole new culture, lol.

Where else have you applied?

I havn't actually been to Durham, but from what I've heard it sounds really great. Did you go to Edinburgh? Its my top choice, but you know what they say about the english admissions so fingers crossed. which one did you like the most?

i thought about st andrews and exeter but both st andrews and the cornwall campus that zoology was on were in really tiny towns so it put me off. and bristol just sounded too competitive and i preferred the course at leeds. newcastles my fallback- BBB and it has a really amazing course.

Apparently edinburgh decisions come out in february- please let me know!

I've been to Durham, really liked it and would be more than happy to go there. Haven't actually been to Edinburgh but it looks really good, thing is its AAA and i'm having a bit of a confidence crisis so if i got the offer don't know if i'd actually choose it. So I don't know which i like the most, if i get an offer i'll go up and have a look and decide then.

I chose st.andrews coz iy had loads of marine biology orientated modules which i'm considering specialising in and i really loved exeter cornwall when i went there although yes it is a pretty small town which i am starting to get concerned about now. Still i've lived in a hamlet for my entire life so won't really make a difference!!
I didn't actually look at Leeds and Newcastle for some reason, was going to put Reading, Newcastle or Nottingham then decided i'd go for the scottish ones for the cheaper fees...

I will, good luck!!

Thanks. I'm on EdExcel. Yeah same MAT was pretty much the nail in the coffin for my oxford dreams. Oh well life moves on I suppose. Yeah I didn't get any help and self taught pretty much the whole content but I did gain sme valuable maths knowledge by going through the papers so all is not lost.
