    Hi all,

I am due to start at the University of Durham next weeked studying Economics and have been starting to think about possible careers. After looking into investment banking, consultancy and insurance, I have found that I would maybe be well suited to a public sector position.

My dream job would be finance/economics related e.g. Bank of England, Treasury, IFS or another civil service position relating to policy advice etc.

I intend to join the relevant societies at university, apply for spring weeks and summer programmes to gain financial and general work experience. I am also considering a charity trip next summer.

What other things might help to compliment/enhance my application? I know that both public and private sector (especially when economics related) tend to bias towards Oxbridge/London graduates so I need to do anything I can to help myself stand out.

    Thanks

That's a complete myth - there's no bias at all towards London/Oxbridge candidates. I know a stack load of stattos and economists who didn't go to Oxbridge or the London universities - I work with them!

My advice to anyone is voluntary work e.g. with http://www.csv.org.uk/ to give you front-line experience at the sharp end, or http://www.do-it.org/ for anything back-office related.
