It is like, more Oxford than Cambridge :p:
It depends on which course really. Girton is not far from the west cambridge site which means that it's close to compscis, vets, physics, some other science courses. It is pretty far from the city center, probably 20+ minute bike ride. Wolfson is about 10 minutes, and it is probably second furthest (followed by Clare Hall, Churchill, Fitz, Robinson, New Hall). But it all depends on your course and what you like. From what I've heard the college is very large and campus-y more like York and those sorts of places.

Any chance of a reply from people actually at Girton or who at least know people there quite well? I can look at a map, so I know how far it is physically, but that doesn't tell me what it's like cycling in during the morning or whether it's a fag getting home after 6pm etc.

It's for #2 son who's thinking about arch & anth.

I live at Trinity Hall's Wychfield site, about half way between the town centre and Girton, and it's certainly not nice trying to get home at 1am after a few ales. Obtaining food is proving to be quite a challenge as well :frown: .

Girton is beyond the "Welcome to Cambridge" sign. It's a good half hour walk from New Hall which is itself 20 minutes from town. So about an hour's walk.

The car rules apply to anything motorized, except a "moped". So motorcycles are out (except for we oldies).

http://www.cam.ac.uk/cambuniv/studenthandbook/studentlife/vehicles/motors.html. The actual rule is in University Ordinances, Ch. 2.

"Moped" isn't defined as far as I can see, but the driving-license definition is a slow 50cc scooter. So anything bigger is out. http://www.camrider.com/ridinglaw2.htm

These are the times from my last (and only) cycle ride to Girton.

King's -> Girton: 15 mins. approx.
Girton -> King's: 12 mins. approx.

I'd like to think I was going pretty fast, but I'm sure Girtonians can improve on my time.

So yeah, it is pretty far out.

Girton's in Wales... Get the bus.

I know someone who went to Girton in the single sexed days. She lived with her boy in Clare, and had a moped. No lies.
Hello, i'm at Girton now and i can honestly say it isn't that far out. My cycle time to the Downing site in Cambridge is 10 mins on a good day or 15 on a slow day. In the morning it's fine but i have to admit going home in the evening can be a bit of a pain after lectures when cycling. The best thing about it was i lost a stone during one term, so i had a nice flat stomach until i went home and started eating lots again. However a helmet and lights are essentials as i was heading along Huntingdon Road today and i passed an accident involving a cyclist and a car, nasty stuff :frown:
Night's out are fine as taxis are £6 to Cambridge and we always get 6 seaters so a pound per person. Food is ok as there is a local Coop in Girton village for essentials but you do have to go to town for a more heavy duty shop.

Admitted i'm cheating this year though as i'm living at Wolfson Court, which is Girton halls near Robinson on Grange Road. :biggrin:

10 mins from Girton to Downing site ... you got to be really fast to do that.

Not really, you just gotta get the timing right for the traffic lights.

There are only like 4 traffic lights between Girton and King's.

So about an hour's walk.

Its not that far, I did it once from the station and it only took about 50 minutes, if I remember rightly

We need to time trial how far away girton really is.

Thanks all. TSR now deigns to show me earlier threads on this very subject, which didn't turn up when I searched yesterday. Mind you, the whole system was fragile and kep hanging and losing posts.

You're getting confused. Clarehall is over just past Selwyn, certainly nowhere near as far as Newhall.

Ideal if you're a mathmo, you'd only have to roll out of bed and you're in the CMS.

Though thinking about it, if you aren't a mathmo, you get to see several hundred mathmos each morning going to lectures.... :eek:

You must have run then. I'm a pretty fast walker and it takes me 20~25 minutes to get from the Station to Trinity's Burrells Field, which is just next to Robinson. I walk faster than most (I hate being between places...) but to do it in 50 minutes is not possible just walking unless you're doing that funny Olympic style walking.

Fortunately i'm not a mathmo, i'm a vet sci but it isn't bad for the vet school either as i'm due there tomorrow. The mathmos are harmless mainly, just a bit odd, at least the ones at Wolfie are. :smile:

Basically, what we're trying to get across here is that Girton isn't that far and only wussy unfit persons from other colleges complain that it is a long way away! You can get the bus if you're feeling really lazy :wink:
