Hyperbole.

That map is rubbish, the centre of Girton village is inside the A14, unless there's more to it than i've seen. But college college definatley is. Try 2 miles tops and you might be close.

Girton village centre to Kings 3.3 miles

Both worked out on sat nav unit.

Thanks to all who replied, #2 son feels able to brave the distance and has applied to Girton today.

Does anyone know what the arch & anth 'aptitude test' consists of? Failing that, do you know any arch & anth people at Girton who might be able to tell us? I know it has a reading list, but that's it.

Yes - the journey goes from the "centre" of Girton Village, around and down towards the "centre" of Cambridge. Plus it's a car journey. Hence hyperbole.
