# maths- conic sections help watch

1. i'm stuck on this question:
Parabola. The point (x,y) has the property that its distance from the point (a,0) is equal to its distance from the line x=-a. Show that y^2 = 4ax.
I know that that's the standard equation, but how do I prove this?
2. What's the distance between (x,y) and (a,0)?

What's the distance between (x,y) and the line x = -a? Sketch this one if you can't think of it.

Now equate these two...
3. thanks
