Dieting and all the minimum calorie intake rubbish!

Hey!

Im so devestated! Ive been on an incredibly strict diet for the past few weeks, combined with a load of exercise and yesterday i weighed myself and was estatic with what the scales said (i had lost a LOT of weight in quite a short time!) and you can tell i have lost weight from my body shape now and things. Anyway, was really, really pleased with how little i have eaten today and how much i have exercised and decided to weigh myself and i have put on a stone since yesterday! Surely this can't have happened! Ive read that when on a diet you should have a minimum calorie intake but i havent taken any notice of this..... could it be that ive starved my body too much and am now putting on weight?

Please help!

The scales aren't as efficient as people think. It fluctuates according to water levels.

I really doubt you could;ve gained a stone in a day, even with water retention. Are you sure you read them right?!

Or the positioning can sometimes affect the reading.

I definately read them right, but i did do it on an uneven surface which might have something to do with it. Does anyone know what happens if you go majorly under the minimum daily calorie requirements for a dieter? Your body wont try and hold onto fat will it?

I read somewhere that that body goes into survival mode and preserving the amount of energy being burnt.

Thats what i am worried about! My calorie intake probably varies from 300 calories a day (yes i know, my diet might seem a bit too strict!) to about 1000 at the very, very, very maximum! And im doing cardio exercise of some form (netball, swimming, running or aerobics) five/ six times a week, for an hour each time! Is this okay?

Your body will try to use as little energy as possible and store as much as it can. But you still can't gain a stone in a day!

But 300 calories is far too little. It's recommended you don't go under 1000. So you will be harming your body in some form.
Screw calorie intake - don't eat LESS, burn MORE. Unless, of course, your intake is much HIGHER than it should be.

Basically, if you want to lose weight eat sensibly and excercise more. When you get to the weight you want to be, just keep eating the same and gradually back off on the excercise until you find a balance that keeps the weight steady. "Diets" ARE a load of crap, and they're not good for your metabolism.

P.S. I'm fairly certain you didn't put on a stone in a day. :p:

300 calories is simply not enough, I mean that's probably not even a sandwich. The best and safest way to lose weight is slowly and continously. Crash dieting and starving yourself really isn't the way to go, it can be very dangerous :frown: If you feel you need to lose weight, it might be worth a trip to the GP to find out the safest way for you to do it. As people say though, exercise is vital, it will tone you up and release endorphins which will make you happier too

If you eat 300-100 calories and do cardio you will burn your MUSCLES not your fat. This is a fact. You should eat at least 1200-1500 calories and do some weight training if you want to lose fat and keep the muscles. Your weight says nothing about how thin you are. Throw the scales away and instead start taking measurements. And for gods sake, eat something. 95% diets don't succeed because people go from one extreme (eating too much to eating nothing) when they should take it slow and build up a new lifestyle and eating regime that hey can stick to for the rest of their lives. Your diet only does harm to you and you will probably gain the weight back after finishing your diet. If you want to tone up, go to a gym and ask them to help you make a proper plan.
300 calories?
you cannot be serious...........i had an eating disorder a couple of years ago, and i was at that level, even a little over that sometimes. Does anyone know you're on this diet?I cant believe people havent said anything.
Seriously, you will be holding onto fat (so your body has SOMETHING) and will be burning muscle.
If you want to lose that much weight you should see someone who knows about it....then you can do it in a healthy way.
A stone in a day is nigh on impossible!

Here's your answer.
And I'm totally with Kismet - crash diets simply do NOT work.

300 calories is less than my total fruit intake aday, that is really not good, surely you wont lose weight, all of the weight you've lose is water and muscles maybe alittle bit of fat or none at all, your harming your self on the long run hun really
I don't know.... i really want to loose weight. Im desperate, i will do anything. I want to be thin and in control. Three hundred calories a day for me is two slices of toast and marmite and one or two low calorie hot chocolate drinks. I want to be thin, it will change my entire life! I dont think the diet can be that bad, i am losing weight on it!

The scales are wrong, did you weigh yourself on the same surface?

Weighing yourself on a carpet or a hard floor makes a massive difference, and theres even differences from carpet to carpet and hard floor to hard floor.

The best way to measure results is consistency, same time, same amount of drink before hand, same place, same surface...bla bla bla.

It was in the same room, but the underlay of the floor is so uneven i recon this might have been the problem! I look like i've lost a lot of weight, it just isn't nice when the scales tell me differently!

300 calories a day is too little, I know what its like wanting to lose weight, but I can tell you, however hard you think it is at the moment, it will get harder, and then harder again, and there is only so much you can take before you give it all up for some respite.

The difference between eating 300 calories a day and 600 is almost nothing, thats an extra 1400 calories you're consuming a week, which isn't even half a pound, if you eat 900 calories a day, thats 4200 calories a week extra from what you're eating now, which is only 1 and a bit lbs of fat, considering you must be losing close to 5lbs of weight a week on your current diet(am I right?) then all you're doing is slowing your weight loss by 1lbs a week, but at least you're likely to be kept reasonable sane and will make it a bit more sustainable.
