What is the definition of perfect pitch?

Throwing a viola into a skip without hitting the rim!

Or,

What's the difference between a viola and a violin?

A viola holds more beer!

For my orchestra we're going to USA this year. We're playing the Thievish Magpie as well.

Do we have to say which youth orchestra(s) we're in? And do you just mean county/national ones, or university ones, or local ones, or what?

Hertfordshire CYO for me, as well as RHUL University symphony, chamber and string orchestras (and possibly Baroque - I haven't found out yet). I'm so excited at the moment, because at the symphony orchestra rehearsal just now we were told that apparently we might be going on tour at the end of this year!!! I've never been on a tour before, so I hope this is going to happen!

I'm in the Univerisities Music Society Orchestra

Abosulty anyone (who is ain an orchestra) can join, if you want to state which one feel free - I just didn't want to pressure people into in

I think this should be a very relaxed society where we can just discuss

I mean, its really intresting to see all the parrarel's between youth orchestras - hands up all those who have played shuberts unfinished!

Tour stories - these are always class!

 We're doing that here in our chamber orchestra, this term! That's one of the pieces I've always wanted to play, but have never had the chance to before...so I'm pretty excited about it!

I think everyone who's played in a youth orchestra has played Schuberts unfinished - bass trombonists have their work cut out for them in the 2nd movement though.

Joke:

How do you play a french horn?

Stick your hand up the bell and play a load of wrong notes.

Tour stories:

On a tour in italy our principal french horn player watched as his new paxman horn fell out of the back of our coach, came out of its case and was run over by a tractor.

Our Bass trombonist got so drunk one night that he was found by the local police in a bush with a packet of mcVities digestives wedged in his bum crack.

Our leader turned up at the wrong church for our first concert and missed the whole thing.

BTW I'm an oldie and it has been 8 years since I played in a youth orchestra. I do some playing with the university and local orchestras, but I don't have a permanent position. I much prefer big band, brass band and brass ensemble playing.

Hi, I'm in a youth orchestra. Have played shuberts unfinished twice - one with YO and once with school orchesra. Schools version was embarissingly rubbish! :p:

What do a viola and a lawsuit have in common?
Everyone is happy when the case is closed

I play french horn in haringey young musician's symphony orchestra

Another viola joke:

What's the difference between a viola player and a prostitute?

A prostitute knows more than one position.

B DM CHHHH!!!!

Oh, and we played schubert's unfinished last year! It's great! The best piece we ever played though was the planets by holst - we did mars, jupiter and venus - it was ACE!

you have to laugh...

This is coming from a viola player!

If you could play any piece in your orchestra what would it be?

Handel's MEssiah would be high on my list - but then again we are playing it in November!

oo and the prelude to tristan Und Isolde - that would be lovely!

Let's see:

Bedfordshire Youth Orchestra
North Bedfordshire String and Chamber Orchestra (leader)
Bedford Music Centre Orchestra (leader but giving up)
and a couple of adult amateur orchestras

Have played Schubert 8 twice too. Also the Wagner historyhoney mentioned, but it was a while ago, and I've been studying it since for A-level.

Obligatory joke...

A female violinist went on a youth orchestra course, and liked the look of one of the rather muscly trumpet players. She went out with him that night, and they kissed under the stars. The next day she came back and her 'cello friend asked what it was like.

"Oh, those tight, buzzy lips were no fun at all to kiss!"

Later that day, she approaches the trumpeter and lets him down gently. Soon after, she catches a handsome tuba player's eye. That night, they're kissing in a candlelit restaurant. She came back the next morning and told her friend all about it.

"He was an awful kisser... two wet, slobbery lips like slabs of raw meat!"

She went off and told the tuba player that she'd had enough.

Not long after, one of the horn players came up to her and asked her out. By now our violinist has been round most of the orchestra (silverjonny note: we're not all like that!) and she's willing to try anything. That night they're alone together.

She comes back the next day and tells her friend,
"Oh, his kissing was OK, I suppose... but the way he held me was something else!"

Bah! Learn to play a proper brass instrument... at least you don't play a farting bedpost.

What's the difference between a viola and an onion?

No-one cries when you cut up a viola.

How do you get a viola player to play tremelo?

Mark their part 'solo'.

How do you get 11 viola players to play in tune?

shoot 10.

What's the definition of a gentleman?

Someone who can play the trombone, but chooses not to.

What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians?

A drummer

How can you tell a drummer is at your door?

The knock speeds up and he doesn't know when to come in.

What dynamics does a bass trombonist have?

ON and OFF

And finally...

Two tuba players walk past a pub...

boom boom

Hehe - I know a different version, with a violist not a drummer. The punchline is 'He's lost the key and doesn't know when to come in'.

I just think someone is having a laugh though. Why make string instruments easier to play in sharps and brass instruments easier to play in flats?

Reply 17

I've only just joined the orchestra I said I'm in but we are doing a few pieces in prep for xmas concert and a piece by William Walton called Crown Imperial.

I love it!
