What do you think the internet will be like in 50 years time? Do you think when we are old and with grandchildren we would be able to come onto TSR (or any other forum or website) and see the things we were writing when we were teenagers?

Do you think we will still also be using social networking sites like Facebook when we are old? I got a feeling these social networking sites are going to be here for a long time... I know quite a lot of old people who use Facebook, and being addicted to a social networking site is now becoming as common as owning a phone.

I think it's the downside of developing technology and advancements.. I'm sure our grandparents were a lot happier when they were our age or whatever. I feel they had a better understanding of what true friendship is or how to make the most out of things. I think people of our generation have a lot more worse social lives and are more reserved, just like to sit in their bedroom, and things like Facebook don't help. I hope the advancement of technology doesn't ruin human civilization socially.

So what do you think?? Will you be using social networking sites when you are old?

There will be a new Facebook/MySpace/Bebo etc, but not much else will change.

virtual reality. websites will be like big mansions, with large grounds. and all the content somehow cleverly distributed around it.

so for example if you went to the BBC site. you could head over to the latest war news section. see VR footage played around you of the war, or a news report etc. and you could see any of your friends that happen to be visiting the website too and have a chat with them.

each use could also have their own private vr "house" where they have a more advanced version of the control system in minority report, and can bring all the content they want into their own house/room.

or something along those lines. but yeh, VR i the way i see the world going

Things will undoubtedly get more complex and bigger as populations grow, but I can also see the internet being 'switched off'... If I were a terrorist I reckon turning the internet off would do far more damage than anything physically. I dont know how you would go about turning it off though xD Im sure there isnt a single switch in some room somewhere... But I dunno

I don't think it is reasonably possible to predict how technology will advance.

Well it looks like it will be. Obama seems to have gone back on his word of keeping net neutrality.

There's no way that something as free and open and anonymous as the internet can stay that way whilst capitalism exists in this world.

Virtual reality. Better than real life.

Think of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, but as a virtual environment.

Everyone would inevitably spend all their time there, setting things up with robots and computers so that no one ever had to leave. Every now and then someone would unplug themselves and go on some crazy internet destroying rampage through the desolate and decaying real world until they got shot down by sniper robots or eaten alive by a nanobot cloud.

There's no evidence that using social networking sites makes you less sociable in the real world. In fact evidence suggest the opposite at the moment.

All the stories about internet addiction in the news recently have no evidence to back them up. Its just the same old sensationalist mass media making noise.

2 generations from now I think the internet will be:

More integrated with the real world (geo-location, real-time data, integrated systems)

    More customisable and more interactive

    Fully mobile

Possibly with a totally different user-interface - like the virtual reality ideas people have mentioned above
