    Really?
Do you believe a more advanced technology will replace it or..?
Either there will be nothing but cockroaches left on earth, or a more advanced technology will have replaced the internet. I'm hoping it'll be the last one.

I don't think it is reasonably possible to predict how technology will advance.
    Boooorrringggggggg :eek3:

We'll all have contact lenses which project a HUD-type display onto our vision, integrated with VR to allow us to select and manipulate data in 3D. Duh.

There's no evidence that using social networking sites makes you less sociable in the real world. In fact evidence suggest the opposite at the moment.

All the stories about internet addiction in the news recently have no evidence to back them up. Its just the same old sensationalist mass media making noise.

2 generations from now I think the internet will be:

More integrated with the real world (geo-location, real-time data, integrated systems)

    More customisable and more interactive

    Fully mobile

Possibly with a totally different user-interface - like the virtual reality ideas people have mentioned above
because you researched that YOU are less sociable.

This is how I see the internet progressing in the next 40-50 years.

Firstly, the internet will be available worldwide from any location on the planet. It will be broadcast around the world wireless, there will be no need for Wi-Fi zones and physical ports as everywhere will be one giant Wi-Fi zone.

Secondly, people won't access the internet from today's accepted standard such as a smartphone, laptop of desktop computer. Instead the internet will be constantly connected to every individual with an implant for receiving broadcasts. Information will be displayed in retinal inserts and manipulated through thought and organic circuitry. Might seem a little far-fetched but if you look at the way technology has progressed up to this point you start to see a trend emerging. Eventually people will want the functionality of a smartphone without having to carry a physical device.

    It's gonna happen, honest!

Something similar to facebook, everyone in the world will have a webpage, which is basically their online identity.

I doubt that things like having wifi over the whole planet, etc will ever come to pass.
At the end of the day, you can only push so much data through the atmosphere.

I expect that we can see more of a move from local processing to cloud computing sort of ideas. Facebook, google etc are already leading the way on this. More sites will be tailored for mobile devices, and I wouldn't be surprised to see an increase in interactive websites (using something like flash, but hopefully not as utterly dire and rubbish).
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that in 50 years time, the internet and the majority of sites on it will actually also be fully standards compliant... (Or at least, I wish).

That said, a higher level of corporate/government censorship is inevitable, but that won't stop people who can be bothered, some things never change after all.

I'm also going to guess that email protocol will be revamped, just to deal with the spam issue.

No, 4chan will actually have become a nation-state of it's own.

It'll be a great place to live unless you're a 14 year old girl.
