I am intending to apply to medicine 2011 entry, but I don't know whether my personal statement is strong enough. In terms of work experience I attended this year 12 event at the hospital, did work experience in a pharmacy and do some volunteering work at 'Brownies' and a local charity shop. But I don't have any workexperience shadowing a GP for example or and voluntary work at a hospice/carehome. I am going to apply anyway but I am thinking of only taking up 3 places for medicine and allocating the other two for biomedical science at Manchester and UCLAN. This is because I know biomedical science at manchester is hard to get into and if I dont get into any medical schools or biomed I would be stuck. Or is it worth taking the risk and occuping all four spaces for medicine and biomed at manchester? Stuck Please help.
    Thanks

Why would anybody put three medical school choices down?

The only person I iknow doing that has been forced to do it because he has got his girlfriend pregnant and can't really go out of the region.

Take it you are dismissing the idea of a gap year?

Get some work experience at a nursing home/hospice lined up for before interview time and try to mention it in your statement. That way you can talk about it at interview at least. GP shadowing won't really help. Put down however many choices you want really. If you really really want to do medicine put down four choices and reapply next year if you don't get in.

Decide what you really want to do, is it biomed or med?

If you want to do medicine you would wait a year and apply.
I have bad predicted grades (ABB) and I am fully prepared to wait a year and apply in a gap year, do you want it badly enough?

Thanks for the advice, but I know it is very competitive and I want to end up with somewhere than nowehere. I would entertain the idea of taking a gap year, I guess it would depend on my results.
