It is quite formal; if I've never met a person before then I'd always rather shake hands than hug or kiss. Most girls do seem to have weak handshakes though - I have a strong one and people always seem surprised by it.

I like shaking hands, personally, but I don't think it's very common outside the workplace now.

I was talking to a lovely American guy in my halls today, who shook my hand when he said goodbye.

I think it's a bit odd, nice, but odd It's usually something that I find only happens in work situations.

I never shake people's hands other than in formal situations, ofc if someone offered me their hand I'd take it and wouldn't find it particularly odd...a hug would be more normal though even from a guy
Also, most girls have pathetic handshakes...part of my advice from a mock interview was to get a stronger handshake
Same here! I guess most girls have rubbish hand shakes lol

I think my handshake is weird for many guys because I have been told on several occasions that it's too flimsy. Worse I'm left handed and my right hand holds little power.

    It's such a disadvantage in interviews .

No, but why did you need any physical contact? What's wrong with just 'goodbye'? Handshakes are pretty professional. Also, I'd usually only use them for greeting a new person, not for a farewell.

Hate handshakes. Some people take your hand and you think it's gonna be a handshake, but they kiss your hand! Soo confusing.

I don't know if this is really sexist but when I shake a man's hand it's always really firm and I get comments about how it's too hard. So with girls I offer a very camp sort of handshake like when you want to dance with a girl and you offer her your hand to place in yours.

From a guy a hug would definitely be better, a hand shake would be alright as well though, if not slightly awkward...actually, yeah, no handshake! Too formal...

You don't really need to do anything. If in doubt, just say goodbye.

I would usually use this handshake with girls, usually with a head nod down.

Handshake-hug sounds good. I just hug everyone, though, unless I don't think they'd appreciate it.

i shake hands when i'm meeting a guy for the first time, but that's it. also to me it seems like more of a greeting than a farewell. plus i don't really know any other girls who do it.
yeah, it's more of a man thing really.

Oh woops, I forgot to mention it wasn't just me and her; there was another guy. I shook his hand first and then I shook hers because I didn't want to be rude although I guess it came out more awkward.
