optometry interviews

Hey guys,
I did my A levels this year(A2's) and got A's in bio, chem, and physics.
Want to apply for optometry at manchester, cardiff, aston, city, and orthoptics at sheffield.
Does anyone know if they interview? And if they do, around what time? I've checked the prospectuses, but they all just say open days.
I am in the process of organising a trip to africa to help at an "sight camp" for a month or two, and wanted to know so i can plan.

cheers
ronnie

I applied to all 5 of these courses at these uni's this time last year, as well as liverpool for orthoptics. I got offers from all 6 and am at Sheffield doing Orthoptics now. As far as I know, Sheffield are the only one's who interview. But phone the departments, explain that you already have your A Level grades, as I don't know if they interview people who already have results or not, My interview for Sheffield was in December, but I think they have another session of interviewing in about March.

If you can't make your interview, don't worry, because as long as you let them know, they can rearrange a date, but let them know sooner rather than later!

Hope this was useful.

Hiya mate,
Thanks for that. I will get on the phone 2mw.
Just out of interset if you had offers from all 4 uni's you applied for to do optometry, how comes you did orthoptics?
Only reason I can see myself doing orthoptics is perhaps, DoH pays tuition fees(oh and the "part of primary eyecare team, making a valuable difference to better the lives of people who's vision is affected" :p: )
Erm....

Well, I have a passion for binocular vision..... obviously...

Hmmmm...

And if you beleived that, you'd beleive anything!

No, I accepted Cardiff as my firm, and Machester was my insurance, but didn't get the grades unfortunately, and so I am here in lovely Sheffield studying orthoptics. (Which is blatantly better than optometry anyway!) Its a really good course, and I think its a more varied proffession. Lets face it, who wants to sit in a darkened room testing eyes all day???

hiya, i am studying optometry right now at city university & i'm in my first year.. so far it has been really enjoyable & I think it's a great career. The workload hasn't been that bad either. There is a lot more to optometry than to just "to sit in a darkened room testing eyes all day" so don't let anyone discourage u! So many opportunities available such as working in a high street optician's, hospital, establishing ur own business, and other areas of specialisation. last yr i applied to city, anglia, cardiff, manchester, aston and bradford and got offers from all except cardiff. city was my firm & apu my insurance. got aab, so i'm @ city! there aren't interviews 4 optometry but some applicants 4 city uni sometimes have interviews.. as optometry is getting more competitive, i think they could implement interviews in the future... by the way, your idea of going abroad 4 the sight camp sounds really impressive... i hope u get in2 the places u want. gud luck!

hey, just wondering whether any of you guys think i would get offers for optometry with BBB at AS level. They are all mid B's an i am gonna resit but do you reckon i'll get offers. I really want to go to Manchester and then Liverpool for Orthoptics
you will get offers if you have a good personal statement. My AS results (all of which I declined except my B in maths) were BBCCD, with resits I got them up to ABBBC so, yes you will get offers.

thanks, just getting a bit scared that wont get any offers at all! I didnt decline mine tho even with my D in german at AS, which i then dropped, but do u reckon i will prob get offers anyway. :frown:
I reckon that you will. As long as your predicted grades are good too. My predicted grades were only BBB, so I'm sure you will get offers. Sometimes it annoys me that Cardiff made me an offer, as I really wanted to go there, even though I stood no chance of getting the grades! I still accepted them as firm though, just in case...

Hey Gathers, I know people who had AS grades similar to your's (or worse) and they got offers but they had managed to get predicted grades of ABB/AAB/AAA. I got BBBC at AS Level & got 5/6 offers. Enjoying Optometry at City right now! As long as you get good predicted grades: i.e, AAB/AAA you should be fine, but make sure you have a good personal statement & hopefully, ur reference should be a good one! Maybe you should email/phone the admissions of the optometry departments up if you're uncertain about your grades? Good luck & hope u get in2 all the places u want!

Hey, I'm thinking of doing optometry, but I got ABBCC (ICT, Eng Lit, Maths, Bio, Chem) for my AS grades. I'm no longer doing Eng Lit and am predicted ABBC/BBCC. Do you think I could get in with those grades.

I haven't got any experience but I'm going to try and get some for Christmas. However, 2 summers ago went to this Aston Summer School thing and we had an Optometry leacture and got to use that machine that you take pictures of the retina with. We were also shown the machine that they use to see if you con wear contact lenses, the one that shows the contuers of your eye.

My brothers an Optom as well. He went to City and his doing a pre-reg place this year. I've talked to him about it and I've flipped through his books many times, it looks really interesting.

So do you think I should bother with my grades?

Hiya, Optometry is getting a lot more competitive nowadays, (City AAB, Aston AAB, Cardiff AAB, Ulster AAB) If you do apply with those predicted grades, make sure your application is outstanding and get your work experience! The Aston summer school thing seems good and I think it might be good to mention it on ur personal statement. You could do high street, private practice and opthalmology work experience if you want to. I think ABB predicted grades should be okay as the remaining unis have ABB entry requirements but I do think AAB would be safer. You should try telling your teachers to boost them up! Ask your brother for advice, etc. Hope you get in and good luck. I think you should apply! take care.

Hi guys, i have an interview for Sheffield for orthoptics and was just wondering whether anyone knew what questions i am likely to get asked? If any one could help i'd be soooo greatful!
Ooh, I'll look mine out, and let you know by private message. The main one is What is the difference between optometry and orthoptics? Please don't get confused!!!!!

When is your interview? I think I'm showing round on the 1st of March, but if you want a brief guided tour of the city or whatever, or want to know absolutely anything about the course, PLEASE ASK!!!!!

Yay, someone else thinking of orthoptics!:biggrin::biggrin:

my interview is on the 7th december so its pretty soon! starting to get a bit scared and worried about it now!
Okay, when the letter says informal chat, it really is informal, but dress smartly, as this will give a better impression across. Don't worry about the interview too much, have questions to ask the interviewers, like for example, something about the clinical placements. But make sure you've read the prospectus thoroughly first, as you don't want o go and ask something when the answer is already there if you look!

The interviews are very short, only like 5 minutes, but it will seem a lot longer! Out of interest, where are they sending you when you get here to wait? As the department is in the process of moving out of the hospital, but its all a bit random at the moment!

Why Sheffield? is possibly another, and Why orthoptics as opposed to optometry? Have reasons.

If you're prepared, then you'll be fine. I will be around on the 7th of December if you do want a guided tour, but I'm only available from 12.

Hope this has been of use to you.

thanks so much! i am being sent to the hospital still to wait. Where is the department moving to?
Wilkinson street. Its about a 2 minute walk from the hospital in the direction of the union. Is it K floor thy are sending you to? Or L floor? Last year it was O floor but that has been gutted. We were told our intro meeting was up there, and it was a building site!

Really, wait for the lifts. You would need to be a fool to use the stairs like I did last year. 13 flights before an interview. Not my best plan, put it that way!!
