    They should turn the prisons into factories, to make the inmates pay for their upkeep.

    Plus it would be a step towards regaining the manufacturing sector the UK was once so well-known for.

    No, since not everybody in prison is mentally ill. People commit crime for the hell of it, not because they have a mental illness.

    But many studies have shown that crime can come down to our genetics. I remember one saying criminals are more likely to have an extra X or Y (can't remember which) chromasome.

    Prison obviously takes on many different roles in society, its a manisfestation of human nature, if you think of society as a body, prison installs fear into the mind, as its not always the reality that is scary but the thought that makes you hestitate before doing a bad thing. Therefore Prison keeps the whole population under a certain morality line. It is essential for them to be ambiguous like this.

    lol.. what? Morality is relative, it cannot exist any other way. Law is necessary since it facilitates social control. It's not about morals, which are subjective, and frankly don't exist.
