The Student Room Group

being on the dole.

Hey im just wondering if being on job seekers allowence for a few years can affect employment. I mean will the employers know you have been on it and therefore know you have not worked? Also does it affect pension in anyway or does it have nothing to do with it? My mate is on the dole (bit of a college drop out) and said that his pension will be increased because he has been unable to find a job  Can someone explain.

Also is it me or does it seem wrong that students with no job cant get such money (have to pay in fact) yet they are the ones who will be of more use to the country. This is probably an old heard of debate but i cant get a job so all these thoughts are going through my head

I had a job when I was a student

I am on the dole now, this will be my 3rd week I am only claiming until the end of October though as I will then have enough money to setup my own business or I mighr even get a job by then.

If you have been on the dole for years then yes I would imagine it would affect future employment.

You can get JSA allowance if you're a part-time student which is less than 12-15 hours a week.

Employers will know that you haven't been working from the inevitable gap on your CV or application form, unless, of course, you are "creative" with the truth.

You could lie and say you've been doing voluntary work (unpaid); they won't check up on that...(?)

No it dosn't matter how many hours you actualy do but what matters is the official status. If you do 12 hours a week and the official status is part time then you can.

However a lot courses you have to work outside of the lectures and that counts. For example if a degree course has 10 hours a week contact hours it will probably require an extra 50-60 hours a week done by your own so its a full time course.

Yeah, you can- go and check at your local job centre.

However, you will need to tell them that you're a part-time student and are free to work in the evenings/week ends.

Edit: As AT said it's your official status that's important- you need to be a part-time student to claim. Basically what AT just said.

But if they ever do, then you are in trouble. Not worth the risk, in my opinion (not to mention the dubious ethics).

It depends on the job, some low-paid jobs never really check up eg telesales work, market research etc. Or you don't have to lie per se, but just embellish the truth...many people do that (and I was once advised to do so! ).

You can get a part time job (like I did) and you have student loads, burserys etc to help you out.

I found my job at random, I saw an advert for a CSS coder and thought I would have no chance as it was really good pay £8-£12 an hour) after a horrible 1 hour interview I got it.

Yet I could not get a £4 an hour job at Maplin.

ma boyf on the dole an has been 4 ages like since he left school
do u think this will stop him gettin a job if he eva gets an intervew?

My advice is that if you're worried about a period of unemployment affecting your chances of future employment, you should take up a variety of volunteer work while unemployed. That way you can still truthfully claim that you have been doing stuff and hopefully learning skills during your period of unemployment. It's also a impressive display of your commitment to the community

they'll look at his grades first, so if he left at 16 with only a couple of GCSEs then he hasn't really got much hope, no matter about the being on the dole bit. You can just be creative with the truth about the big gap in his employment history (as Xanthe said), and say you were studying for something or travelling the world is always a good one.

ollie
