My first year at Uni the fire alarms were a regular thing people coming back from a night out and starting to cook when drunk and setting the smoke alarms off which in turn set off the fire alarms. welcome to uni life
Ah, fire alarms. They used to test them at 10 every Monday morning in my first year, and they were't little bells either, they were closer to nuclear alert klaxons. Oh god was that a fun way to start every week.

But if you knew it was going to happen, why not just get dressed and go stand outside 2 minutes before it went off?
When i was at Glasgow it went off several times a day. The system was ****ing useless and would go off if anyone dared to make toast (regardless of whether or not there was smoke) but would remain silent on occasions when a genuine fire was going on ( my oven caught fire once and smoke was everywhere but not a peep). Really rather annoying.

We had a drill this morning at about 8:30, which was a bit annoying as today is my day 'off'. At lest they have a silent test thing here on moday mornings so that all we hear is the automatic fire doors closing... lovely.

On the first day someone actually set it off with toast in the flat next to mine, so thats how we met our RT for the first time too.
Last year ours went off the day before a sign appeared saying "please remember fireworks should not be lit in your room".

Ours went off at 4:10 this morning :frown: first time I've heard it though, even though it's gone off before, cos I've been working the odd evening in the Union, so by time I get back people have gone to bed after returning n setting the alarm off after the drunken night.

Worst thing was, looking at where the alarm was triggered, it was the room opposite me in my flat, yet everybody was definately asleep!

Yeah, me too. If it went a week without happening, we got nervous. Once went off four times in one day... I've yet to work out if these were mostly malicious or mostly, like you say, people burning the toast.

Often we'd just ignore it, even though it was bloody loud and went on for ten minutes at least. Once A Clockwork Orange was on TV and a bunch of us were watching it in one of our common rooms. The firemen looked somewhat bemused when they wandered in to see us all watching TV and drinking beer while something akin to an air-raid alarm was going off.
I'm deaf, so I got a fire alarm pager from my Uni, which has a flashing light thingy for when I'm sleeping.
One problem - it alerts of any fire alarm across the entire campus. Every night last week I was woken up by a fire alarm, none of which were in my hall! Fortunately its calmed down a bit now!

In my hall in first year they kindly put a alarm in everybodys rooms. my god did it scare me when it went off. stupid phd student trying to cook as well
We've had six so far... not all of them were in the middle of the night, luckily. Too many were! The joys of being in the most hated hall on campus!

Ohh yeah, we got woken by a 'real' fire alarm in halls! Smoke billowing out of the kicken window, 3 fire engines tearing up the road, people running around...

For some reason I was a bit pissed and played the hero, running into that kitchen to see what the problem was. Some idiot had come back from the pub and wanted egg on toast. So they cracked an egg onto the cooker and left. No pan either....you would not believe how much smoke that produced!

we had 3 real fire drills yesterday in the space of 3 hours.

Someone set fire to some toilet rolls in the boys loos at lunch time. Then an hour later a rubish bin outside one of the main lecture threatres caught fire, enough to leave a strong burning smell and a small amount of smoke to come out of one of the windows.

An hour later about 3:45pm the room directly above the previous bin fire had alot more smoke coming out of the window, they sent us home because it was going to be 40 mins before they could check the whole building.

We ended up with 2 fire engines this time, they were suspecting high school kids from accross the road causing it.

Oh dear ol' Rutland....

You lot've had the most fire alarms out of all the halls so far! Been woken up far too many times by Rutland :P
Although I guess thats what happens when people get distracted from cooking n stuff by rutlanders who take it up the arse

Sorry

Last year in halls the alarm was going off. Once I was in the room that caused it, this chinese girl was frying cucumber and lettuce (now what on earth is that all about?) and left the door open.
I didn't mind the fire alarms, I lived on the 1st floor and always seemed prepared. And the firemen were cute and could make the siren do a wolf whistle hahaha
one at 3.30 am - still awake so it was ok but didnt appreciate being made to stand out in the freezing cold becuase the steam from someones shower had drifted into the corridor

It's 10am on a Monday morning, with no classes til 1, no one should have to be awake and outside before noon under such circumstances.

4.10am eeek!!

Apparantly it was an accident that it went off, and it should be going off in the night, early morning tomorrow as a proper drill.

I'm sleeping with clothes right by my bed tonight!
