Tapton...none yet!

Devonshire Courtyard has had 3! Including one going off about 3.30am- so loads of confuzzled, sleep walking students shivering away in jammies and boxers!

Ranmoor's had a couple. There's only been one which everyone had to get up for, at about ten to seven in the morning on Tuesday 4th. There have been little individiual "block alarms" (as Ranmoor is split into various blocks). However, my block hasn't had a "block alarm" as such, so I've only suffered the one standard drill, although some blocks have suffered 2 or 3 accidental drills of their own.

Hehehe, I'm so glad I'm out of University owned properities for this very reason - I certainly won't miss those alarm calls.

The main thing now is - from here on in, if you are in University owned flats, you're expected to call 999 for the Fire Brigade. Which sounds a bit silly as the 999 operator never sounds too impressed, but it's just something to do with the amount of people located in the buildings. For example, you'll normally get two fully kitted out Fire Engines down to Crescent Flats everytime the alarm goes off.

If you're in University owned halls I don't think you're obligued to do this - as I think it's the porters' job, unless of course there is a real fire!

Leadmill Point had one today at about 3pm (thankfully).

Had a load of pranks though the other night at 3am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if you had the same talk about setting of alarms as jokes as we had in tapton youd have to be a real sicko to do it

it wastes phenominal amounts of money...thousands of pounds..even if they dont do anything

and some girl who had just finished her a levels died in sheffield not to long ago.,..as all the engines were tending to a false alarm at a hall while she got burnt from the legs up at the top story of a building..she died 2 weeks later..her mum fell into depression and killed her self on the anniversary of her death a year later

the fire fighting force in sheffield is not very big for such a large city so every false alarm could really make a difference..as it did

anyway..i now feel like hunting down the people who set those things off and beating there legs with a burning log..see how they like it

sigh*

I concur. It is shameful and deplorable to set off false alarms for fun or as a joke, and back in the US some states consider it a criminal offense.

had ours (halifax) 7 this morning :frown:

The actual fire alarm at Endcliffe Vale Flats went off last Saturday. 3.45am I think it was.
We all stood outside, shivering, until the fire engine showed up, searched every single room inside my flat and another flat across the way, and the firemen gave us really disapproving looks. Like we enjoyed standing outside in the ******* freezing cold. Was about half an hour as well.

I agree with SolInvincitus, the Canadian (and US in some states) way of making is a federal offence is the way to go. Threaten people with imprisonment and they will strongly reconsider doing these things.

As for beating their legs with a burning log, I feel that is a bit harsh to mother nature burning part of a tree, just get a blow torch and cut slowly up the length of each side of their legs melting the flesh and muscle and boiling the blood and mangling their bones. That is much more appropriate cos then they will be wanting the pain to end, and the only way that will happen is if they commit suicide cos I will not put them out of their misery.

Sorry if I am going on a bit here, but I have a personal beef with people who set off fire alarms in building with no cause other than sick and twisted amusement. An old friend of mine lost both parents and sister in a real fire in their little old house all because somebody set off the fire alarm in a sky scraper filled with offices inhabited by people from some of the biggest companies in the county, and the fire department sent one Landrover to the house and all the other trucks to the sky scraper, and the Landrover was not able to do anything to the fire, and they all died inside from smoke inhalation. My friend was in detention at school, and he came home to find the coroner outside the burnt remains of his house. He was so traumatised by that sight, that he never went in or near another building for a long time, and last I heard he was walking around and living in a forest somewhere.

He was not a very good friend, just a class mate I was paired with alot, but I moved school and he stayed, we lost contact and I heard all of this from one of my friends who stayed there and was a good friend with him. Either way it is not nice.

An old Chinese proverb says 'Death is more of the survivor's affair than the dead's'. I agree 100% with this.

Ha, I've had two at Ranmoor - the one for the whole building and one for my block. Both were way too early, but they don't bother me overly because it's better to be safe than sorry in my eyes.

There was a fire drill at 7am at Woodvale Flats today. Not fun.

We had a fire drill yesterday at 4pm...then when there was a REAL fire in my block last night, the b**tard alarm didn't go off!!!!!!!! WE COULD'VE DIED!!!

Reply 14

tbh, I think they shouldn't bother with fire drills in university accomodation. After the first we were all told it took us too long, and they would do another soon.

When that came lots of people just stayed in bed, by the time you goto uni you know how fire alarms work, they really don't need to make you practice it.

We had a fire drill at 6.30am yesterday, which wasnt really that fun! We got told that there would be no more fire drills though so next time there is an alarm, it may just be a fire!

Flat 13, the laundry block
I so didn't enjoy that 6.30 one either, I may sue the university accommodation services if I get pneumonia. I've now lost my voice in addition to the previous illness I was 'suffering'.

Stephenson is yet to have its fire drill. People are getting up at 6:30 thinking that the alarm has gone off. Perhaps a good old fashioned 'appease-the-gods' sacrifice to Vesta or Vulcan should do the trick.
