Predicted grades? How important to UEA application?

Hello,

I am applying to UEA to do english literature and creative writing, and the entry requirement is AAB.

My problem however is I think I am going to be given fairly bad predicted grades.

English lang & lit - A
Psychology - B
Classics - C... Maybe a B if i keep persuading?

Even so in the best scenario the best I will be predicted is ABB,
And the entry req is AAB,
Will they take a look at my application and straight away reject me?
Even if I have a strong PS?
Please help I am very worried :frown:

I'm wondering this too, not about the uni you wanna go to though :P. I know I can get the grades but I'm not predicted them. Let's just hope we'll get offers. I have heard of people getting offers on the basis of references and ps, so don't lose hope

Last year I didn't quite have the grades for some unis, albeit not UEA, but they still gave me offers. I wouldn't worry about it..

Im applying for International Development there with a prediction of ABC, for an ABB requirement... but are you doing an other at AS? coz I will have 2 in different subjects by the time I finnish college, sometimes they allow that as the equivalent to an A level, email them, they get back pretty fast!

I can only offer you my own experience and I'm afraid it's bad news but I'd still go for it, you might still have a chance...

I applied for entry in 08 with predicted grades of BBB. Didn't even get through the first round of the CW application process - I did, however, get an offer to study English and American Literature, which I ended up doing as UEA was the best uni I'd applied to. (This was incredibly frustrating as I ended up getting AAB at A-Level...TEACHERS!) I then changed to English Lit after first year, so I've ended up doing something more highbrow.

I would still apply, though, just don't do what I did and pin all your hopes on UEA. Look at other CW courses from more established unis, not just the standard Bath Spa etc.

I don't know anything outside of the information I was given on the open day. It's one of their most competitive courses, and the bad news is that it seemed they wouldn't even look at applications below their grade requirements. The admissions tutor that I spoke to said that they were seriously considering raising the offer to AAA or even to include the A* grade because of the amount of competition, but held back on it this year.

You could still apply, and I wish you all the best, but from what I heard at the open day, don't pin your hopes of UEA too strongly.

Have you considered going for their straight English Lit course? The offer is ABB-AAB (and apparently you can often get that lowered if you attend some kind of post-offer open day thing and do an informal interview...) I know someone on that course, and you can still do some Creative Writing modules, without having quite so much competition to get in. Obviously you wouldn't be able to have writing as such a big part of your degree, but it's a decent compromise, no? (I've put this down as a possible insurance for that very reason.)

I must say I'm more worry about my AS results. I want to study business management which requires BBB which I am predicted. However at AS level I only achieved CCC due to some family problems at that time.

I emailed the admissions people at the business school and explained why my AS grades were low and pleaded them to see my high GCSE grades and predicted AAA grades at A2 as a basis to judge my academic ability.

So at the end of the day I am predicted BBB but I don't know what the admissions team are like. Will they see my current CCC profile and the resits I'm doing and just laugh?

I got an offer yesterday with ACCD at AS and it's to one of their good courses. I don't know if you meet the entry requirements though for your course, the entry was AAB-ABB for mine and I was predicted ABB and got an offer. You never know unless you try! As long as you have some good backups

With my predicted grades at BBB (even though I'm on target to achieving AAB)... I meet the requirements for the business management course fine.
Like I said, I'm just worried about them seeing CCC at AS with a load of resits and running a mile! I have a very good work portfolio, personal statement, and reference so I hope they look at that stuff first! :P

Thankyou for taking the time to reply, always appreciated!

Just to throw an update for anyone who reads this in the future. I got a conditional today from UEA for Business Management at BBB. Really happy!
Just shows its not all about your AS results if you're willing to put in the effort!

I've not had any offers yet but was also a bit worried about my AS result.

I only do 1 A level (Business) and also a National Diploma (IT). I'm applying for Computing for Business which requires a business related subject at level 3. Hopefully I will get all distinctions in my BTEC and at least a B in my A Level, but I'm not sure how important the A level will be as I will have enough UCAS points from BTEC alone.

Just out of interest, how long did it take you to get a reply from UEA? I applied on 22nd December and haven't heard anything back yet.

My application wasn't sent far before that. Maybe a week or so. Expect to hear back very soon, I'm sure you'll be quite near the top of the list by now!

Good luck!

Thanks  I hope so. I really want to get a place - It's my first choice at the moment

I've applied, and got an offer, for English Lit and am going to the open day on the 12th of Feb.
But you've freaked me out with the whole 'informal interview' thing! I was just expecting a standard open day with a lecture and a taster seminar, where did you hear about the 'informal interview'?

I was so pleased that I wouldn't have to interview for any!

Hi. Like the above poster, I'd also like to know where you heard about the informal interviews on the applicant open days? I'm asking because I have a conditional offer, but I'm so scared I won't be able to make the grade (34 points at IB). If this is true, getting my offer lowered by 2 or even 1 points would help me so much. x_X Let me know if you have any more info, please?

And what I came in originally to post:

To those who want to apply but don't have the predicted grades - go for it. I didn't apply for an english course, but I did apply for Law with American Law. UEA is the only uni in the country that offers this course, and on their open day they kept stressing about how it was competitive and how the required grades were higher than their other law courses (similar to the stories I just read about their english courses). They were asking for 34 points at IB, and I applied with 30. I was not expecting to get a place, but I somehow did. (:

Apply, but don't expect to get in. From my experience, UEA seems to value personal statements just as much as your grades. However, bear in mind, that you are predicted those grades for a reason. If they do give you a conditional offer and then you don't make the cut, it will probably be doubly upsetting for you. So bear in mind you actually have to make the grades, even if they accept you with lower predicted grades.

Good luck to all. (:

Oh, no no, sorry to scare you. I guess the word 'chat' would be more appropriate! Seems most of my friends who got UEA offers went to the open day and were taken aside for a quick talk which was basically asking whether they were hoping to firm UEA or something (not a grilling session, don't worry! ^^ ) and most of them got their offer lowered.

I don't know if this happens to everyone or if it's only for certain courses though. Sorry I can't give you more information, it's just what I've been told by others who I know who got UEA offers. :|

Ohhh that's cool. o.O Last question lmao, what courses did your friends apply for who were 'taken aside for a quick chat'? Because I heard that the 'informal interview' things were only for medical students. xP Thanks
