Wow, very compelling argument there.

In terms of traditional Uni Courses then UoS is much better. If you want something more vocational or just an easy ride then go to Solent

I wouldn't say that.
I'm not at either of these Universities, and don't doubt for a second that UoS is academically stronger by quite some distance.

But I mean, if say an Art & Design student wanted to study in Southampton, Solent is their only option. And despite what some of the more academic students opinions are on Art & Design students, they aren't doing it for an "easy ride", there's a hell of a lot of work involved, and you've obviously got to be talented.

Please read what had been written. I've bolded the key word in there.

Looking at the Art and Design courses at Solent. They generally look to be more vocational courses. i.e. Courses that are direct training for a Job. In terms of the two Southampton Uni's then that's something that Solent does do and as far as I'm aware isn't something UoS offers. If you were comparing Software Engineering degrees then it's more likely that Solent is an easy ride compared to UoS.

Wow..Im applying for Solent - Psychology (criminal behaviour)
I chose the Uni because I loved the look of the course, also they asked for a lower number of UCAS points..240, rather than the highest im applying for (Lincoln, asking for 300).
Im from the north of england, and so I havent been able to see the university.

But just seeing this, is putting me off southampton all together.
Seriously...how immature is this? No matter what university you're at, you are UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. So surely you shouldnt be behaving like this.

I dont want to be seen as stupid, for if I do go to Solent next year (I dont know where I want to go yet.)
Im not mega smart, but im not absolutely stupid either..If I go to Solent I dont want to be seen as thick.

This is really off putting to potential students of both southampton unis. Just seeing the immature rivalry.

Southampton university - You MAY be smarter than people at solent, so surely you shouldnt be behaving like this.

Solent - You MAY be less smart than UoS, but you also MAY be smarter than some people there. Again, UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, shouldnt behave like this.

Southampton uni and solent are totally different and basically hate each other as usual when theres 2 unis in 1 city.

I go to solent
And i don't just study something like media or a watersports course... I do Accounting, i'm only in my first year but I really like it, the campus is near town, the people at uni are really nice and the teaching is good.

Don't take league tables as the only thing you look at as if you get a good degree and work hard you should still have good job prospects wherever you are

I'm glad someone has good word for Solent because I'm there next year to study Psychology (criminal behaviour). I only applied for Solent and Portsmouth due to their location and Southampton only did basic Psyc. I think that as long as you work hard and end up with a good degree it shouldn't really matter which uni you studied at. :-)

Exactly if you get a good degree then you will be able to get a good job so doesn't matter if your at Solent or Southampton or anywhere else

I have a place at solent and even though It has a terrible reputation I don't mind going because I'm migrating after I finish my degree and Australia (where i'm moving to) don't really care what uk uni you attended as long as you have the degree. I can honestly say I'm not stupid, quite intelligent actually, It's just that I'm incredibly lazy and so I think I'd probably fit in well at solent.

Ps. I'm a northerner so I'm not sure what southampton itself is even like , well saying that I live about 20 minutes from it at the moment... SORRY i'm just waffling ...

Southampton and Solent are totally different. Neither is better than the other, they simply specialise in different subject areas.

If you want to do something in the academic field like maths or science etc., go to Southampton. If you want to go into the creative side of things, for example music, drama, art, design, media etc. go to Solent. I'm a music student and Solent stood out to me as somewhere I could excel and further my musicianship, so that's where I am

i'am a student at Solent and i think its fantastic.. im not "looser", or doing a "micky mouse degree" as some may put it; in fact i come from a very privileged background and had to work very hard to get to a University at all as i'am quite badly dyslexic.. For people such as myself Solent is perfect.. Southampton Uni and Solent are very different Universities and study very different courses, so to slate it in the way it has been is bias to Southampton Uni and doesn't do Solent justice to those such as myself who needed a break through in life in order to stand myself out in life as someone who wants to achieve and succeed but isn't academic enough for the higher ranked uni's  perhaps Southampton Uni students should take note of this?

You're actually at southampton aren't you Boney? You aren't doing much for Solent's rep.

I can't be bothered with the rivalry. They offer different things for the most part so aren't really comparable. Southampton has fewer weaker departments than Solent, but Solent has a decent rep for some niche things. And even if it doesn't, it doesn't impact on me whether people go there or not.

I've applied to Solent :/

Pretty worried after reading this thread though.
Anyone on here that goes to Solent who Isn't a "no-hoper" that would be willing to discuss it with me?

I'm hoping so, as from reading the website It looked perfect for me.

Like a poster above, I'm from the North and haven't been able to attend an open day, but the regret I now feel from that Is Immense.

It might help if you said what you've applied for.

My college Psychology lecturer did her Psychology degree at Solent and never wanted to hear a bad word against the Uni, she really enjoyed her time there and said the Psychology department was great.

I have also applied to Southampton Solent to do Film and Television Studio Production. Like said earlier, the course looks really good for me on the website and I've got an interview for it next Wednesday. However, I'm now also quite worried after reading this thread.. I'm not just put off from Solent but also the place as a whole. I can understand why there is rivalry; It's exactly the same here up in Leeds and quite frankly, I'm scared that I'll be branded just for going to a university that appeals to me.

For doing a course like that then you're more likely to have to look at one of the newer Uni's. I doubt UoS would have a course like that (same for other older Uni's).

In terms of the rivalry between the two Uni's I'd say it's generally more a friendly rivalry.

I'm pretty sure the "rivalry" in Soton is no different from any other place in the country with 2+ unis in! I haven't heard a bad word about Solent since I've been here, except a bit of jokey banter which I'm sure you'd find anywhere. You always get the odd morons who take it too far, but most people don't give a damn where you go and the people that do probs aren't worth knowing anyway.

It's like having two football teams in the same city really! Some people take it seriously and are fails as a result, but for most people it's friendly (depending on the football teams tho, hah...).

Seriously though, don't be put off applying - if it's where you feel is right for you then who cares what anyone else thinks, whether they live in the same city or not?! It's a really nice city (IMO) and it'd be a shame to miss out due to worries which I bet really are nothing.
