ST102 Lecture

I know its not a great start; but i missed today's lecture :frown:

So can anyone tell me what i missed, because from the public folders, the notes listed for last year's lecture 2 is stem and leaf...something like this:

Summary
Types of Data
Organising Univariate Data
Stem and Leaf Diagrams
Frequency Distributions etc
Data Features
........
Choose a suitable Stem eg first two digits

The Leaf is then the final digit

Stem Leaves
10 9,2
11 6
12 1,1
13
14 8
15 2,8
16 etc

Does that look like what was in the lecture?

Did u get the pack: notes, slides etc.?

Hope someone can help

Basically the point of the lecture was to pay 5 quid for the massive notes pack they give you. However, the notes pack is also avaliable online (according to the lecturer) for free and you can print it off yourself.

I fell asleep (literally) during the first half of the lecture because it was about data which was pretty uninspiring to be honest. You didn't miss anything at all in the data, since I think most of the notes are in the course pack.

Some time was spent on stem and leaf diagram, but if you've done S1, then you've already covered what you need to know. And yeah, that looks like the stem and leaf example we got.

Finally, frequency distributions was just him showing several different distributions. Again if you have done S1/S2 before, then its nothing new. By this time, few people were really paying attention to his lecture (everybody was just chatting with each other) and the lecturer seeing that none of us were really concentrating anymore, decided to call it a day.

Oh, he also mentioned that you shouldn't buy the textbooks yet. Firstly some textbooks don't include everything and secondly, you should try and find which textbook is most coherent to you. He suggested just reading em for free in waterstone's and if you find the book that teaches stuff in the right way for you, then get that book.

Thanks for the reply.

Did u buy the £5 pack at the lecture, or do u need to go to a room (like for MA100?
If so, what room?

Thanks in advance

We had to buy the pack at the lecture.

I hate ST102.

And I hate the lecturer too.

Perhaps 'hate' is too strong...But he really should get on with his lectures. He goes on rambling about nothing relevant. I could have summarised that 1 hr lecture in 10 minutes.

David Balmer i imagine? If you look on facebook in the groups section you'll see that there is a David Balmer Taught Me Nothing group for anyone that has done ST102 or is doing it. He does like to randomly go on about useless stuff though, but he is highly amusing. And after being hit by a paper aeroplane launched from the back of the peacock theatre by yours truly, he did then accuse some kid in the front row and threw it back at his head, which was highly amusing

:congrats:

I might try that one of these days.:pwnd:
I kinda wondered how the 2nd years learnt anything in his classes...guess I now know they didn't lol.

And yeah, ST102 is probably the lecture to skip if you don't wanna go (just remember to attend the classes and do the exercises) because I honestly learnt nothing. The lecture is mildly entertaining though at times, I think the EC102 lecturer is the best of the lot though

Yep totally right on the ST102 bit, the lectures are a complete waste of time, because for at least 50% of the lecture he goes off on a complete tangent. As long as you do all the exercises every week when they are set, and pay attention in your classes you will do fine. Danny Quah is a legend, but you wont learn sh*t lol. You'll find as the course progresses and you gradually arent meeting his targets for progress that he'll say "ah we're skipping a couple of lectures, so learn those yourself" - tis most annoying.

I thought that ST102 lecture was a complete waste of time, did hardly anything useful. I hope it improves next time

I seem to be the only one that doesn't mind him, AND being reminded of stuff that I learnt a while back!

has anyone tried the exercise yet?
We have to draw histograms :frown:

its all done on Minitab so you'll be ok - you just plug the numbers in and click the button and a histogram pops up.

Minitabs? :p: Is it on the library computers? Or does it come with one of the textbooks or something?

I didn't even realize we had ST102 homework till now lol.

You guys are being too hard with David Balmer. Teaching is not easy, especially when the subject is very mathematical. In my case I have room to introduce a lot of jokes and funny stuff in my classes, but my colleagues who are teaching economics or statistics told me that they can do nothing to make the classes less boring.

So do not complain bad bad bad undergraduates!

Londo, do you teach at the School? Which course(s) do you teach at undergrad level?

Lol Minitab is on all the universities computers, so the library ones and ones in your halls. You can also purchase it from the IT place. Basically you need two computer programs for your first year - Minitab (for ST102) and Maple (the god of all programs, for MA100 and any other maths module you are taking/will take).
