Mucus build up in the lung

I have had a cold for around about a week now and I thought it was going away. But last night I think somehow mucus managed to build up in my right lung because I was woken up at 5am this morning with a severe cough (probably most severe I have ever had) that was almost constant but dissapated after 3 hours to a normal cough.
My question is, is this a normal occurance or is there something amiss that has caused this mucus build up?
Before anyone replies saying that the mucus was probably from my throat rather than my lung, I am pretty sure it was from my right lung because I had a horrible feeling in that during the 3 hours.
It probably didn't help that I had quite a lot to drink last night as part of a drinking game, also I noticed I wasn't blowing my nose much (only twice in the whole evening ~7 hours).
I am guessing this sort of thing is a common occurance, but is there any way to prevent it happening again?

Could be a form of chest infection perhaps? I had one like that earlier in the year...
Best to just go to the doctors to get it checked out - but it's unlikely that they'll do much.

hope you get over it buddy; illness is a foe for sure.

You don't smoke, do you??

Don't smoke and have never had any sort of respiratory infection in my life. I am just going to see how I feel over the next few days.
Let that be a lesson to you all that when someone says vodka is good for colds, don't decide that means you can drink as much as you like in a drinking game

The only other thing I can think of that may have caused it is the Beechams Powder Capsules I took that night. It includes an ingredient called Phenylephrine Hydrochloride which is supposed to have an effect on mucus production, aswell as on your eyes but that is not important.

Phenylephrine reduces mucous production. If you feel like you have fluid in you lung you should probably see your GP, could be chest infection or suchlike.

Have a GP listen to your lung, just to be on the sure side. If you have had a cold for some days you could be developing what is called "pleuritis" which is an irritation of part of your ribcage (the anatomical intricacies are a bit tricky to explain in a few words). That can happen on only one side and causes pains or "weird" feelings on the affected side. Can be cured quite easily though, if you go to a doctor's.
You could try inhaling some steam (pour hot water onto a small blob of vapor rub, sit over pot/bowl, cover head with towl, breath normaly not extremely deep). That might help the mucus come out.
Avoid places where other people smoke. Don't party for a few days.
