Carboxylic Acid and Esters

Hi, can someone help me with these questions please?

What do u get when u react 2-hydroxypropanoic acid with:

a) Acidified Potassium Dichromate

b) Excess PCl5

c) Ammonia (gaseous)

d) Aqeous Sodium Hydroxide

e) Ethanol in the presence of conc. Sulphuric Acid

f) (CH3 )2 NH (dont know the name sorry :frown: )

What types of reaction are occuring in:

a, d and e?

Also, when 2-hydroxypropanoate is converted to 2-hydroxypropanoic acid:

i) Give the reagents and conditions necessary...I put dilute aqeuous acid + reflux..is this right?

ii) What type of reaction is this...I put hydrolysis? Is this right?

Finally, why is conc Sulphuric Acid used to promote the reaction of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol?

Any help would be appreciated...and theres some rep in it for you :smile:

I think:
a) CH3(CO)(COOH) {Oxidation}
b) CH3(CHCl)(COCl)
c) CH3(CHOH)(COONH4)
d) CH3(CHOH)(COONa) {Acid-Base}
e) CH3(CHOH)(COOC2H5) {Esterification}
f) CH3(CHOH)(COO)(NH2)(CH3)2

2nd one you are right both i) and ii)
3rd one. As conc H2SO4 can absorb water very strongly.
