Best Mixed Chapel Choir

Hi,

I will probably be applying to Oxford next year for Economics & Management as well as applying for a Choral Scholarship. I have decided not to apply for a Choral Award to Christ Church, Magdalen or New College purely because I do not want to have to sing services every evening...however I would like to sing in a choir of a very good standard. Thus I propose the question, 'perhaps from a current choral award holder or someone who knows something about the Oxford choirs, which are the best mixed chapel choirs from this list:

Keble
Lincoln
Pembroke
Queen's
St John's
St Peter's
Trinity
University
Worcester

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Queen's has the reputation of being the best mixed voice choir. Having sung with the Director of Music, I can well believe it.

<disclaimer - i know very little about choirs or music! this is just based on some random osmosised info>

cynically though, if you wanted to increase your chances for E&M (one of the most competitive courses, methinks?) then by applying to a Foundation you certainly would?
given academically you then just have to rearch a certain standard, rather than being better academically than all the competition.

that said - i can understand why one wouldn't want such a commitment! :p:

Lincoln's choir is very good and they go on trips - they all naffed off to Spain this year! Ask Oxymoron about it - he's in the choir.

That's not really as true anymore. Guy here at Catz won an award to New, but got academically pooled to Catz. If he hadn't reached the certain standard, surely he wouldn't have been put in the pool?

Queen's are the best I think, followed by Keble, John's, Exeter, Lincoln. Oriel have suddenly upped the services and started taking it all seriously, poaching some very good singers along the way.

Once at Oxford, the best choirs to join are probably Schola and Pusey House.

I'm pretty sure you can't do E&M at Magdalen anyway

Schola is the best mixed choir in Oxford, closely followed by Commotio, I reckon. Both choirs aren't linked to any specific college. Also, with Schola, you get to sing a huge range of music (not purely English choral stuff) which is a nice change from the usual excesses of Tallis and Byrd etc. College chapel choir wise though, St John's and Queens are by far the best.

Admissions Office need to update their leaflets then!

& yeah Nick - Magd doesn't do E&M anymore. :p:

I have it on good authority that it's Queen's, but they do sing three services a week.

[bias]But of course, Teddy Hall's chapel choir is the best really. [/bias]
