your teachers will make a predicted grade mostly based on your AS results
Universities look at these predictions and then may give an offer eg AAB
then at A2 you need to achieve those grades to get in

And AS grades count towards A grades...so if you get an A at AS-Level those marks will be added to your A2 score. Hmm, I can't really explain this coherently. Do you understand? If not, can someone else elaborate?

Unis look at your a2 predictions which are based on your As results. Also the marks you gained in as will go towards your final grade, therefore they do matter.

A levels are marked out of 600.

That is: ?/300 at As level combined with ?/300 at A level.

You need 480/600 overall to get an A, which would be called your A level grade, even though it is your AS level added to your A level mark.

So, if you get 200/300 (B) at AS level for a subject, you would need 280/300 at A level to get an A overall. The higher your mark at AS level, the lower a mark you need at A level, to get a good grade.

I hope this makes sense.

And low and behold, if you get 300/300 at AS level (definitely not unheard of at all, in fact its probably much more common than full marks at GCSE!) then you only need 180/300 UMS to get an A! Then you could relax a bit in the 2nd year

Don't forget that UMS is sometimes rounded up, so you don't actually have to get 100% in an exam to get 100% UMS marks. For example, I got 100% UMS in philosophy, but on the actual paper I dropped two marks. So you can get 300/300 UMS and still drop a few marks.

I didn't get 300/300 in anything (damn coursework) but got 100% in at least one exam in each subject, which I feel is more consistent (masking bitterness...) :p:

Jesus, I've had 100% in MODULES, but not overall AS's.

Ah, the joys of only needing 180/300 this year for an A in sociology
