Edinburgh do maths and philosophy? I really wanted to apply there but I was told I was unlikely to get an offer cos of their scottish quota

Im going to be cheeky here and ask if anyone wants to sell Maths and Philosiphy as a degree, to me? Or if taking no essay subjects will cut this option from me? (Subjects in sig)

I'll sell it to you for £20. :p:

Anyway, as far as I know most unis don't require you to have done philosophy before starting philosophy courses, so you won't be disadvantaged through lack of knowledge. They might want some kind of evidence that you haven't forgotten how to write, I suppose; look at doing some essay competitions (you can mention that you wrote about whatever in your PS, even if you didn't win) perhaps? Do some reading into general philosophy or the philosophy of maths to see whether it seems like the sort of thing you'll be interested in.

Haha, This is cool

I'm applying to:
Oxford (Brasenose college), Warwick and King's College London (the other two are just for maths)

Taking Maths, Further maths, Physics and Psychology

Hey tamtam  , i'm looking to apply for the same 3 Uni's next year, i'm kind of in a complex situation in terms of my education. 2008 was my first year of Alevels... but my mother passed away january '09 just before exam week. i went back to school a few months later and felt unstable so i decided to take the rest of that year off. i went back to school in sep '09 and carried on with my first year taking Maths, Chemistry and Art (further maths was not an option at my school). i have carried those three subjects on to A2 and dropped Photography at AS.

this year is my final year of Alevels and i should have applied for the course in october, but i was unsure of what i wanted to do. also, i was advised by my councillor to take a gap year before going to university (as he and my father both felt that a break from education will benefit me psychologically)

in terms of applying to these Universities, i would like to ask you for your advice and opinion on my situation. should i take up further maths in my gap year? i have not done any written pieces of work to submit :s-smilie:

Thankyou. x

Hey , I'm sorry to hear about your situation, I would definitely advise you to take up further maths, I'm not too sure what you should do in terms of written work - I was rejected by oxford pre-interview and pretty sure part of the reason was that my written work just wasn't very good  Sorry I'm not much help! Best of luck! xx

Anyone had any more news?

Still waiting on King's College London (hopefully my back-up) and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna firm my Warwick offer

How about you? Did you get an interview from Oxford?

I've got a friend having an awesome time at Warwick, well done. Do you have to do STEP papers for the offer?

I go up to Oxford tomorrow. Haven't done maths in about a month. S

If anyone has questions about the course I'm a recent Maths/Phil graduate from Bristol.

Thought I'd offer as course is mentioned so rarely on here...

Hi, I'm aware your comment was 12 years ago but its worth a shot. Is further maths preferred or needed when applying for maths and philosophy at bristol? On the website it only requires an A* in mathematics and two other subjects at a grade A however like most maths courses, I'm wondering whether further maths is preferred or whether you took a further maths a level. Thank you!

almost all unis prefer/recommend further maths if you want to do a degree that's heavily focussed in maths. eventho it is not necessary since not all schools offer a level further maths, if you had the opportunity to study it and you didn't, it does slightly disadvantage you.
