Hi, I just found this online journalism course on a Google ad. It looks interesting, but before I think about signing up, I want a few opinions. Anyone know anything about it, and if so, is it good and legit?

Thanks a lot for that link :top:. I knew of that website, but I didn't even realise that it had a forum. I should go on there more often :yep:

The best way into the journalism industry is through contacts and work experience, journalism qualifications are less important

It's what I'd love to do. Political and music editor for my school newspaper, but as the editor is lazy and never puts it out thinking of starting my own one.

Also, where are the best places for work experience?

Yeah, I get that. But it does say on the site that part of the course involves more hands-on practical skills than a degree, and work experience and a portfolio at the end. I dunno, it just seemed interesting.

Speaking of which, how easy or difficult do you think it would be to write to loads of magazines and newspapers asking for work experience, when I have rather poor A Levels and no degree? That said, I have worked for a local magazine and I'm working on a personal blog (which isn't brilliant at the moment but hopefully I'll get there soon enough).

If you don't have a degree, then you still have a chance at getting work experience. Try applying to your local paper, and using that base of experience to get into more popular publications.

That can be alleviated  You can practise lots by watching BBC news everyday, and trying to mimic it. Over time, you'll have a better type of accent for broadcasting.

Hi, my mum's trying to get me to apply for a Foundation Journalism Course: http://www.lcc.arts.ac.uk/courses/journalism/fda_journalism.htm

I'm not sure if I really want to do it, or whether it'd really be a good idea. Does that type of course help much for getting into magazine journalism?

Or could I be better off doing NCTJ Multimedia Journalism? http://www.nctj.com/custom/accredited/course?id=7

Ah, choices :eek3:. I'm so confused at what to do :s-smilie:.

I've been looking into becoming a journalist and it seems very interesting  It's so difficult to get work experience for journalism when you're under 18!! Not one of the 7 or 8 newspapers and magazines I wrote to last year in my area gave me a place and all because I was too young! Grrr. Anyone know any that do allow young people for work experience places? I think I'd prefer to go into more serious journalism rather than women's magazines, etc but I wouldn't mind experience in them. Who knows - I might really like it :p:

If you want to go for the foundation year hurry, because the deadline is on the fifteenth!
All the courses will aid you
but experience will be vital to pick up along the way.

What type of journalism would you like to do then? I'm just signing up to a fashion site for a freelance job to do fashion articles for them . If you're interested, let me know and I'll post the link :yep:

Oh, I really need to ask this, as I'm slightly confused!

The Journalist Works Course at the Argus in Brighton, is that not the same course at the Multimedia Journalism Course at City College Brighton and Hove? Because I was thinking they were the same thing, but after more research it seems that maybe they are not? :s-smilie:

Can someone clarify this, please? Thanks
