How many calories do you usually burn off at the gym?

No reason, just curious.

I go to the gym around 5-6 days a week (the days I don't go, I jog). Burn around 500-600 cals now. This is a huge improvement to when I hardly ever went at the beginning of this year, but then I played soccer back then so yeah. I generally try to get to the gym at around 7-8am in the morning.

I go like 1-2 times a week, and burn of about 700 - 1400 calories per session.

It's great! :p:

I never exercise nor go to the gym... In fact, I try to not to move if I don't have to walk to class...uh I'm not lethargic. (I did dance last semester and haven't exercised since May.)

Not a bad thing :p:

But not a good thing :frown:

Join a sports club maybe, you should really exercise just to stretch those muscles.

A jog each morning for 15 mins would be perfect for you.

Typical American.

This is the right time to start an exercise plan. You need it.

I guess someone can argue, that the majority of guys don't need to exercise as they can workout and lose some calories each day purely by masterbation.

Depends, if you go by what the machines say I'd be burning in excess of 1500 calories , but in reality its nearer 500-600 from exercise alone.

Reply 7

I don't go to a gym and don't use any exercise machines (at least, not on a regular basis)...however, I walk a few miles a day and play football and lacrosse on top of that a few times a week - more than enough exercise to burn off a few pounds  The actual amount of calories I burn is of no great importance to me, if I'm perfectly honest.

none.

probably because i don't go to the gym.but it's debatable

At my school instead of regular PE lessons we go to the gym every thursday for an hour. I go on the treadmill for about 20-25 minutes and the machine said I burnt 200 calories.

I don't really understand the calorie thing because 200 calories seems too little  .

Dont be down dennidree 200 calories is a small chocolate bar!
Really the machines are pretty untrustworthy as it all depends about your current weight etc.
When i go to the gym its more about toning up. but keep in mind muscles burn more calories than fat so a few hours in the gym a week will be good for burning calories all day every day.
Though Dannibella the amount of time you spend in the gym (which
is a lil crazy your suppose to have days off) i think your burning enough calories to not have to worry

could not agree with you any more, the calorie meter which shows how many cals youve burned using the machine over a certain point is just so inaccurate.

good on you though for going to the gym and trying to get/keep fit.

have you ever though about hiit training, do a little search on it. its also good you train first thing the morning, you also raise your base metabolic rate for the rest of the day. i used to jog say 3 miles 3 times a week, at about 6:30am after 10 mins of waking up and do 2-3 hiit session a week and i lost quite alot of fat. the abs started to come out
i dont do only 2-3 jogs a week for cardio now as im trying to bulk up.

good luck though and stick with it, im sure glad i did! the results will definately make you feel so good once people see the difference, just remember though, cardio + diet = fitness!!!!! (or fat loss)

shouldn't just be about calories. If you've got a cardio focus then surely your all round fitness is what you're doing it for. Therefore, do circuits, boxing and throw some light resistance work in after a row. The possibilities are endless.

If all you want to do is burn calories, then why not just eat less in the first place.

Gym gym gym calorie calorie fitness blah blah blah. How come I know fat people who go to the gym constantly, and I just go to the pub and yet don't get fat? I think it's a myth, all this gyming. I think the secret to weight loss is Jack Daniels. Or potentially - spending too much money on Jack Daniels and being forced to live on plain pasta and rice...

theres a difference to fat and fit.
there can be a chubby guy who does cardio, eats a clean diet and can run for miles on end or swim for ages and there can be a guy of average build (whatever that means but i think you get a picture of whats average) who drinks pints, smokes now and again but cant run 2 miles without panting heavily at the end of it.
in our eyes, the 'average' guy would look fitter simply because he has less fat.

im 'overweight', but i sure do look better naked than guys who dont go to the gym regularly or eat clean diets.

Not many...im trying to put on bulk now

tbh going to the gym is really poor IMO, its very boring, u might as well play football or basketball then go to the gym, and dont like drink coke after the gym, cause then ur just adding the calaries back after u lost them!

Cambridge muscle is right, instead of cardio you can just cut out the calories you use up at the gym, its a much more efficient way of losing weight, cardio is an inefficient way of losing weight just makes you fitter, and the machines always lie as to how many calories you have burnt, if you want the "toned" (i hate this word) appearance your better off doing hiit like people have suggested or weights (don't worry you will not put on weight as you are eating at a calorie deficit, and therefore will not put on muscle mass).

Look, please don't come on here spouting complete and utter *****.

What the bloody hell do you think HIIT is? Its cardio, and people will rarely be able to do HIIT as intense as it needs to be - ie. to complete exhaustion, you try running yourself completely ragged every morning and see how long it takes for you to quit.

Cutting out the calories is only good to a certain extent, how many calories are you going to cut exactly? Where do you draw the line? When you're eating 2000 calories? 1500? 500? Exactly - its also essential that your body gets the required amounts of protein/EFA's and micronutrients, and to do that you have to eat a fair bit of food.

If she eats 1800 calories a day she will lose weight, she would not have to do any cardio and still be losing weight, i may have worded the cardio thing and hiit thing wrong but by cardio i meant doing long constant sessions on a treadmill/bike/rower whatever takes your fancy. But my theory is right and i stand by it.

Cutting calories will only work to a certain extent? If she is eating below her maintenance calories she will always lose weight, i'm not talking about going to like 500 calories but if shes eating between 1500-2000 calories i bet she will lose weight, there is plenty enough food there, and if she feels she may noy get enough EFA's and nutrients she can take a multi vit tablet.
