Dr Judith Heyer

Dr Heyer will be my interviewer for my Oxford Interview this Friday. I'm an international student (from Singapore) and will thus only have 1 interview. I had applied for PPE, and made and open application for the Colleges.

I know that she's an Economic Lecturer at Somerville College, but does anyone here have any personal experience working with her? Could you enlighten me on what she likes most, her precise area of specialisation of Economics, her current research journals/projects, and what her personality is like?

I'd sincerely appreciate it if you could link me to some of her journals/publications so I can prepare myself adequately. Tried Google but it did not yield satisfactory results.

Thanks in advance!

Also, can I get a general perception as to whether I should be wearing a suit, or whether a formal long-sleeved shirt with a tie/tie-pin is sufficient?

I feel that wearing a suit would be overdressing, but I noticed that there are a significant number of forum users who wore suits for their interviews. How did it work out for you?

You've posted like 3 different topics in like 5 minutes.

My advice for you...chill out.

Honestly Haggis, that didn't help the discussion at all.

It won't help knowing AT ALL. What are you going to do with this knowledge? And do you think tutors are particularly themselves in interview?

There is no point knowing what her specialities are. They almost certainly won't come up in interview, and falsely steering the interview to them will look artificial and probably result in the interviewee being eaten alive.

The right attitude to an interview is to be ready to think on your feet and to know well the material/facts that it's entirely reasonable to expect of a candidate - not some specialist area of research

Perfect advice Neapolitan. Pepperoni, in my opinion you are getting far too wound up with the whole application process. It's something that hundreds of students go through each year, and although I accept that it can be a daunting process, arguably more so for an international student, there's no need to get so stressed over it.

There is no need to research your interviewer's history and background - that will be a complete and utter waste of time.

You've done an open application - good for you, just sit back and relax until you find out which college you have been assigned to. Even then, there is no need to perform any research on it, unless it is purely for interest's sake.

Honestly you say that I have not helped the discussion in any way, however you have to realise that my advice is to just stop worrying so much about it. If you are good enough, you will get in, if you are not good enough, or for whatever other reason, you will get rejected. Everyone else who is applying is in this same predicament.

CHILL OUT!!

dr heyer was my economics tutor last year. she's a lovely person, looks intimidating but isn't, really. her research interests are, i think, developmental economics in sub-saharan africa and india. it's a bit late for you but there you are. drop me a mail if you need to find out more; i'm also a singaporean, at somerville, doing PPE. good luck

How many tutors usually go abroad and do interviews? Are the foreign interviews common for any subject that receives applicants?
4 tutors for south-east asia.. peter Mcfadden, judith heyer, Barbara A. Kennedy, and another one .. forget .. they represent Oxford regardless of courses you applied, except medicine and fine art
What's a tie pin?

It's an accessory you use to secure your tie onto your shirt.
