daily calories

I know this is NOT a sensible/healthy way to lose wieght at all - and definetely not something i am intending to do (as it is just starving yourself) but i was listening to some people in one of my lectures nattering away as you do and they were having what seemed like n obvious conversation to me...

if you were to restrict your daily calorie intake to 750 a day you will pretty much definetely lose weight right?

I am NOT recommending this AT ALL as i understand it is an unhealthy way of losing weight and probably would be losing muscle/water etc. - but they seemed to be debating whether you would actually lose weight - surely if you are leading a normal life except restricting your calorie intake that much you can only lose weight?

thanks

You would, but it would be in all the wrong ways and would be very unhealthy and unsustainable.

would you not go into that starvation mode thingy and therefore stop losing weight
Reply 3
Yes, you would definitely lose weight, and despite what everyone here seems to think, no, it wouldn't kill you.

your metabolism will slow so doing the same thing will use fewer calories
there are better ways to loose weight
750 calories doesn't mean starvation!...yeah you will lose weight but you can still eat pretty healthy on that! obviously it's probably not healthy in the very long term if you lose too much weight though...
eg.
bowl of cereal: 200 calories
sandwich: 300 calories
chicken and vegetables: 250 calories
i'd say that was pretty balanced!
also- even if you ate more than that and burnt some off at the gym and your 'net' calories was 750- that wouldnt be too unhealthy..

if your daily calorie intake was around 750 would the weight loss be pretty rapid?
Reply 7
yes
very very quick
i konsume 4000 a day

As a women...and without any other exercise, that would be roughly 2-3lbs a week obviously dependant on your personal energy requirements.

but if this hypothetically is rapid-weight-loss-for-vanity-reasons (which i imagine it would be, given it's hardly likely to have the health benefits of increased fitness with a more balanced +energy expenditure & - calorie intake)..

.. don't quite see the logic given thin people who don't eat enough are generally fairly unaesthetically pleasing - bloated stomachs, saggy/wrinkled skin, lack of energy etc. compared to much more attractive athletically healthy types.

I eat about 1200-1300 calories a day and at first I lost quite a bit of weight but Im not losing weight anymore. So, I do wonder if I actually ate 2000 a day whether I'd put on weight.....
i think if i ate 2000 a day id def put on weight quickly!!!!!! the smaller you are the less calories you need- generally. this makes sense as the bigger you are the more calories you need to eat to maintain your weight... although there are those girls with annoyingly high metabolisms and vice versa. it's only an average recommendation- the average woman is size 14-16 right? so if you are smaller than that you will need less.
you can find calorie calculators on the net quite easily- im 5'2 and about 9st3 i am moderatley active and i apparantly need about 1400 a day to just maintain my weight- this means i need to go down to about 900-1000 if i wanna lose weight. i count my calories pretty avidly...i cant lose much weight on 1200 a day... unless i'm working out.

same here, I guess if you wanna go up to 2000 cals, you should start increasing calories step by step not all at once, so that yourt body would get used to the new calorie intake and would burn it
If you lived on 750 calories a day you would be v v tired after a few days. I know cos ive done it and its not fun.

Erm, what you seem to be saying is fatter people need more food. Nah-uh. Metabolism doesn't quite work like that. Someone who is taller and more muscular and more active would need more calories than someone shorter and less active. 2000 cal a day is recommended for women.

why is it that they get bloated stomachs?

not exactly sure actually (& to point out it's not an established medical fact or anything - but i see plenty of bordering anoerxics v. not an ounce of fat sportspeople & the difference is very very obvious).

probably similar reason to why starvation victims do..? (whatever that may be) but to a lesser extent, obviously.
(fermentation internal bacteria in absence of food or something = gas? ok - that was an interview style, try & think of something plausible answer!)

but still, if it's trying to look good you're going for i don't think barely eating is necessarily the way - simple use more calories than you consume whilst still consuming enough for your body to function properly.

i would use the 'toned' word here - but think narb would correct me  so hopefully he can put into proper training/fitness esque words what i mean about the importance of exercise w/ weight loss? :p:

I would not worry about measuring your carb/protein intake so carefully in terms of grams, and yes, work it up a bit more. Once the sun is down you don't have to fast, right? So just eat normally, or is that not ok?

what's supposed to be the calorie intake for a fifteen year old?(basically, someone who's still growing, albeit very slowly)
