    Hello

I am a current 2nd Year MA Geography-History Undergraduate Student, and you wont regret coming, its fantastic. Fistly, in 1st Year you do courses the first one is Global Worlds, Global Challenges, the second one is unsurprisingly Global Worlds, Local Challenges. As this is 1st year, the courses are equally human and physical geography. In 2nd Year, they specialise, you take 2 course 1st semester (if you want to do double honours) one physical (Environmental Systems (extremelly hard!)) and the other one is human geography ( Space, Economy and Society- really easy and more conceptual). See the website, it will tell you all you need to know (www.abdn.ac.uk/geography) esp for 3rd year+ as I am only a 2nd Year!

    Good Luck
PM me if u need more help, but I'd email the Geography Dept at [email protected] and they will be able to answer you better.

And is the town really as grim as it's made out to be?

No, the town is not grim at all. See this Lonely Planet Guide http://www.abdn.ac.uk/sras/news/336/

I'm in 4th year, and of course the majority of students is British (not just Scottish, quite a few from England), but there are also people from Finland, Poland, Netherlands, and probably other countries as well.

I think they have changed the course structure quite a bit since this year, so 1st-3rd year are different now from when I did it. However, I'm pretty sure (as jazza007 said) that in 1st year you only take mandatory courses. Not sure about 2nd year because I was on exchange then. In 3rd year I had to take 2 mandatory courses (one about the history of geography as an academic subject/ theories in geography and the other is to teach you how to do research in preparation for your dissertation).

Then in the summer between 3rd and 4th year you spend some time doing practical research for your disseration, which you write in the 1st semester of 4th year. Then there is one more mandatory course and 4 optional courses.

Also; in 2nd year you go on a short field course (2-3 days I think) somewhere in Scotland, and in the summer between 3rd and 4th year you can do a longer (1 week or 10 days I think) field course. The locations for the field course change, but this year they were in either the Alps (for physical geography) or Russia (for human geography).
