I'm looking into contingency plans if my job and career in the civil service goes belly-up. (Job cuts and all that).

Is anyone training in this field or does anyone work in this field? What's it like work-wise? In particular, what are the students like? Is it like crowd control in a secondary school or does the non-compulsory bit make a difference? I'd be particularly interested in history/economics/politics.

Also, are any of you members of UCU? I was told about their free membership for those training to be lecturers or teachers in post-16 education. (http://www.ucu.org.uk/index.cfm?articleid=2389). What are they like as a union?
