there isnt really very much risk of explosion at all. The reaction is carefully controlled, and is killed immediately if the reaction accelerates wildly, as far as i know. Renewable energy would be a good choice, but nuclear has the ability to power a lot. We should be using Thorium though, as it has a supply of hundreds of years, and Britain has substantial deposits that up until now havent been used.
As for the waste, it can be confined within concrete/lead. The radiation types are important, as obviously the most penetrative is also the weakest. If confined correctly, doesnt pose a danger to anyone.

As for the costs of renewables and nuclear reactors, it is only the startup+end costs that are high. If the design life of the project is long, then costs to run wont be high and prices will lower as time goes on. Oil/Gas may be cheap, but they wont be when supply is more limited as time progresses- and infrastructure takes time to build, best do it soon....
