    High school Case study

You have an unknown powder , and you mix it with water.
You then filter it, and with the filtrate, react it with silver nitrate
    what would you observe?

Also, what would you observe if you reacted barium with nitric acid or sulphuric or hydrochloric acid

    and also pottasium chromate?

can anyone give me equations with state symbols pleasE?

    ty

    what precautions would you take?

If you dissolve, filter and add silver nitrate to an unknown substance there are only two possibilities:

    1. You get a precipitate
    2. You don't

However, this doesn't only apply to silver nitrate, but to practically any soluble ionic substance.

Barium is a reactive metal - it reacts vigorously with water, so you should expect the reaction with acid to be dangerously explosive.

With hydrochloric and sulphuric it makes the salt and hydrogen, but nobody in their right mind would actually do it.

With nitric acid it either gives nitrogen dioxide, water and the salt or it may become passive (I would have to look that up) - also explosively dangerous...

    and also potassium chromate what?

Any specific equations or just ones off the top of the head?

Always wear a condom unless you know exactly where your partner's been...
