The Student Room Group

The Official Pub/Bar/Club Recommendation Thread

Just thought I'd start a thread because I feel a bit out of date and I have no idea where and when the best student nights are these days! So go ahead and post your recommendations - even if they aren't "student nights" as such, i'm always willing to try a new waterhole

My recommendation:

The Mad Moose - expensive drinks (£4+ for large glass of wine  ) but food is very well priced and you get a huge plateful, gorgeous chunky chips and the burgers are highly recommended!!!

Mercy every other Tuesday. When we went there last time, it cost £3 for the entire night because of the bus service they run. They gave away so much money and free champagne/alcopops nobody had to spend anything.

We saw the Mercy bus at the bus stop the other night - was a right laugh cos they were trying to get people on it who had just come out of the Ordinary Boys gig ie not the type of people who were up for going to Mercy!

Poonana's (sp?) can be pretty cool to go to before hitting a club.

What's Mery then?

I'm probably coming up to sample Norwich next month, so this is an ideal thread for ideas!

I discovered the Mischief the other week, down in Tombland...might look a bit rubbish but its fairly cheap (house trebles = £3!!!), they have pool tables and loads of pub / board games to play and they play decent music!!! Well worth a visit one evening as part of a Tombland pub crawl or something

We so need to have a TSR bar crawl, how many of us are there on here? If not this year there should definatly be enough of the new people next year.

ponanas on a monday is free, and they play indie/rock music

there are 3 whetherspoons, the bell hotel, the glasshouse and lloyds no.1. both the bell and glasshouse are fairly good, but lloyds can get very busy.

if you fancy a nice homely chilled out pint with some mates, i strongly recommend the champion at the queens road/st. stephens roundabout. nice simple pubbing at its best.

if you fancy some sophistication then the garden house or unthank arms are both a bit pricy but very nice places

For a chill out drink at a pub I recomend 'the murderer's'. Its near the bell hotel just up timber hill. Its the cobeled hill oposite the rear enterance to Primark
oh lord - not being a mercy fan - here are some other venues....

pubs: the ten bells, the murderers, the fat cat, the belle vue (cheap meals for 2 plus bottle of wine- its called the early bird special, plus they have ultra cheap double shots there, dont serve jack daniels though - i used to work there, hence info overload!), the alexander - these pubs are around earlham/dereham road, murderers is in town and the ten bells is on st benedicts street - which is always worth a check....the glasshouse - ever trusty spoons - is always good (go there rather than the bell).i would also recommend the play house bar - prob one of my fav places in norwich. cool bar (outside patio and outdoor heaters) and the cinema next door shows excellent arty films.

also on st. benedicts street is the norwich arts centre which has a good bar, and many gig nights - famous and local types.
the waterfront - in all its infamy - is good for gigs/ meltdown on sat/80s night on fri - mind the sticky floors and sweaty masses at the bar.
the underground - at sonic every other thursday - electroclash and absurdly dressed art school students - the music is good downstairs and upstairs...
there was a great club - lock stock - that played all your favourite indie tunes but it closed down in my 2nd year and i believe the night or some reincarnation of it has moved to the mustard lounge on one fri a month - not being in norwich at the moment due to year in america fun - i havent actually been to it?
and lastly - brighton rocks at the lcr - always a pleasure

i think thats all....strangely tired now and really want a drink!

I'm gonna do a bit of promotion here... Norwegian Blue on Riverside is always a good night, particularly beacause of the lovely barmaids (ie me!) Other than that, the Murderers, Old Orleans, and the Glasshouse are cool

Ahh, we go into Norwegian Blue for shots on bar crawls.

Just a long shot but you weren't one of the bar maids who my friend asked for a pitcher of Red Bull last Friday were you?

Message for machine dreams or anyone else who knows. Where is the play house bar? Direction would be needed so someone with average knowledge could get there.
Really wanna go tonight but not knowing the location making it tricky.
PLEASE HELP
whoops sorry - havent been on here for a bit due to work crisis - hope you found the playhouse bar ok (and arent wandering around norwich a week later in a daze still looking!)
