if i get a fact from a book, then do i just write the researchers name or the persons book whos its in..ill give an example..
as many as one in five will experience depression at some point in their lives (Bebbington et al, 1989)........ but this is written in paul gilberts book about depression....
so when i write this in my essay do i just put bebbington et al or what? and do i include page numbers, in the text or at the end in the referncing section?

Usually APA format references it in text as:
-x number of people do x (Bebbington, Ross, Fraser, Mike, 1989)
You have to mention all the authors names the first time you reference, then any further mentions of that reference can be Bebbington et al, 1989.
In the references section it depends on what form of referencing your uni wants. Check the handbook for your course, it will usually give an example.
Format we use for reference section is:
Bebbington, A.D., Ross, J.R., and Mike, S.L. (1989) Cited in Gilbert, P. (1989) A History Of Psychology. Essex: Pearson Ltd.
