Student raped in Fallowfield

Woman, 21, raped in student village

POLICE have stepped up patrols throughout Fallowfield after a student was raped in an alleyway.

The 21-year-old woman was walking home at around 1.45am on Sunday following a night out with friends when she was grabbed from behind by a man and dragged into a passageway.

She was raped before the attacker ran off along Cawdor Road towards Wilmslow Road.

A mobile police station has been set up in Owens Park and students and members of the public can use this to report information or concerns.

Officers will also be handing out leaflets in the area over the next few days to give safety advice and appeal for information.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Owen of Longsight CID said: "It is important to bear in mind that incidents like this are fortunately extremely rare.

"I would like to stress that people living in the area shouldn't panic and they should not stop going out. However, we are asking that all students take extra care.

"Don't walk on your own late at night and where possible stick to well-used paths and routes. Try to stay in groups wherever possible and avoid dark and secluded areas.

"Remain fully aware of your surroundings at all times and keep valuable items hidden from view."

No need to panic folks, just use your common sense and you'll be fine. I feel extremely sorry for the girl but, why on earth was she walking around at 2 o'clock in the morning by herself?????!!!!!!!!

If you are travelling home from a night out always get a taxi or walk with a group of friends.

Remember, folks never, ever, ever walk home on your own late at night/ very early in the morning.

My mate rang me to tell me about it on monday or tuesday, its concerning but im sure she isnt the first or the last unfortunately. I think this should serve as a reminder to us girlies to look after ourselves. I for one have had an arguement with my boyf befre now and walked off in a strop on my own; it doesnt always cross my mind how daft that really is. When i was in york i would often walk home alone even through quite a dodgy area; is so easy to do after a few drinks.

Just stick to the main roads, having said that there has been some incidents of muggings down Wilmslow Road, its not so bad now but a few years ago the South Manchester reporter was just full of muggings in Fallowfied. At the end of the day its still one of the rougher parts of Manchester despite all its offerings.

Crininals are attracted to areas which have a lot of students. Just use your common sense, don't take short cuts in isolated areas and buy a personal attack alarm.

This is not an oppurtunity to panic, its an oppurtunity to be careful in order to stop it happening to you.

Edit with regard to the Fallowfield muggings it was often people from smaller villages and towns which got mugged becuase they would flash their mobile phones about and leave valuables on display. When using cash machines make sure the area is busy and there are no dodgy people hanging around. Also make sure people can't see your pin number.

I wondered why that van was always there.

didn't they catch the guy though? Im sure I saw a headline "fallowfield rapist caught" on the student newspaper last week...

Reply 5

Yeah I am pretty sure unless there has been a new incident that they have caught the guy.

Reply 6

yeh the guy has been caught but everyones still gotta look after themselves, theres always gonna b sick people about

Reply 7

Don't walk through PF park, is all I can say.

I've lived in Fallowfield all my life ....never been mugged, burgled or assaulted and I don't know anyone who has.

Around the Owens Park student complex it is a bit dodgy for students as they can't handle their ale, go out and get p*ssed and are then completely incapable of avoiding trouble / looking after themselves.

Away from Owens Park, Fallowfield is a normal quiet residential area .... many lecturers live here.

I've lived in Fallowfield for two years and know of someone who has been attacked and have 3 friends who have been burgled. At the end of the day you should be able to walk the streets without the thought of being attacked.

There have been a total of 6 sexual assaults (not all rapes - but that doesnt make it any better) in Fallowfield recently, the police assume it is all by the same person. Hence the massive police presence in Fallowfield recently.

Its worrying to say the least, best thing to do is use your mind. Dont walk home alone, if you are leaving, let people know and stay in contact, dont take short cuts etc...
