If you think you'll get an A by retaking then what's the problem with them increasing their offer to an A? If it's Nottingham you want to go to, you may as well try.

Basically what most applicants do(myself included) is that we choose a safety net university which you know you will meet the entry requirements for, then choose one which is risky but one which you really want to go to. This could be above your current grades/1 grade higher than what you plan on acheiving. And the rest of the universities have the entry requirements which you are expected to acheive.
I applied to oxford, in the hope that a miracle will happen and I get an offer(not likely at all) and Portsmouth which I have an offer from and I could get them grades with no problems
