I'm applying for French and Russian (among other things), so obviously the Russian bit will be in the SSEES. I'm a little bit concerned that it'll be kind of isolated, but I think there was a thread on this a while ago, and current students there were pretty positive about it. What are you applying for?

SSEES isn't really isolated, and if you're doing French and Russian you wouldn't notice the isolation even if it were isolated, because you'll still have a base inside UCL proper as part of the French Department. Having said that, your "home department" will be SSEES, but the only thing that will make any difference to is the lumbering machine that UCL becomes when it decides that it's fun to bureaucratise.

Anyway, don't worry about isolation at SSEES. Think yourself lucky that by the time you get there, the building will actually have finished and that, yes, you will have classrooms to be taught in. The other day we actually had a class that convened itself in a corridor. The lifts are still not for public use, the facade was only finished on Wednesday and you can't sit in the library without being interrupted by the sound of pneumatic drills.

As for Russian, if you're starting it from scratch, you should think very long and very hard about starting it. The Russian teaching at UCL, in my opinion, is not up to much, at least in terms of grammar and language teaching in any case (literature and culture seem to be okay.) But I started a course in German and Russian last month, and I've ended up dropping Russian because it's plain too difficult. If you want to do it, don't let me put you off (I'm not trying to) but if you've only done French up to now, and your passion is for French, and you know loads about France and can speak the language, starting Russian might be a mistake. That's what I found with German; the ab initio UCL course is, for obvious reasons, structured so that you get loads of Russian and comparatively little of your other language. I found that I wasn't doing enough German for my liking, so I switched to single honours. I'd originally been put off single honours languages because I thought it'd be crap in the graduate marketplace, but when it comes down to it, I'd rather do a degree I like and enjoy myself for four years, than do a degree I hate, be turned completely against Russia and never go there anyway.

Hope that helps. Of course, it won't apply to you at all if you've got A-level Russian  If you got any other questions, send me a message.

MKG, thanks for taking the time to reply. It's always good to get feedback from current students.

Madelyn, I'm applying for LR27 (BA Politics and East European Studies). I know there are more people on this forum applying for this course, so post here peeps!

Hey, I've applied for BA Economics with Business with East European Studies with a year abroad (mouthful or what), and I'm worried because they said that most people had economics/maths/business A level and I dont (Latin, Psychology and Spanish). I'd be doing Russian language if I get accepted, otherwise I'm doing Spanish in all my other choices (except I might do Russian in Edinburgh). I applied because theres no other degree like it and its an area that really interests me. Anyways anyone else applying to SSEES?

There was a girl that PMed me once, can't remember her name, but she was applying for LR27...where is she...?
im applying for LR27. Dunno if its my first choice though...
Does it have a good reputation? I havent really heard much about it. But i find it really random that UCL doesnt offer a straight politics course.

If UCL did offer a straight Politics course imagine the competition there would be for places. ^o)

The SSEES does have a good reputation. Where else are you applying to? What's your top choice?
Theres competition everywhere. But i dont mind, just want to stay in london.
Um im applying to (probably)
LSE: Government
LSE: Social Policy and Government
UCL: Politics and East European Studies
Kings: War Studies
SOAS: Politics
City: International Politics

I might change one of the LSE courses for Kings - European studies but im not sure.
In terms of courses, War studies is my favourite but if i in some remote chance i get into LSE then obivously that will be my top.

What about you?

Which course have you applied for? They usually interview before giving out offers.

You Londoners need to get out, most people I meet at London universities are from London. Have you ever thought looking beyond your country (London) and seeing real British life?

I guess not. You will feel you have left the country!

Please, we do not want northerns/farmers to post here...

SSEES is an elitest institution that unfortunately do not have "traffic cones" and "road signs" as valid hobies so mate, it looks as though you are out of luck...

But seriously, you are the most hypocritical person to post that message, just think about what you are saying... "real" British life is life not in london is as bad as thinking that london is the only the type of British life...

btw, i'm not even British so you can shoot me using your good old British country values... Jeez... what a moron fish you are!

I like the course, I like the uni (somewhat) that's the reason why I'm interested in applying. I couldn't give a flying f*ck where it was located, whether it's 20 mins from my house or hundreds of miles away. End of discussion.

'i like the uni (somewhat)'

translation...

UCL is my second choice (because i love revenged so much of course) but mainly because i REALLY want to go to LSE, in fact i WILL SELL MYSLEF to get in... you'd never have guessed from my behaviour...

seriously, why are you taking a gap year though... the fees are more now?!

fact - you didn't answer the question i asked......

don't mention Pd, it's offensive to my religion... Icelandish people don't like hippies, they cause global warming and increase the melting of the polar ice caps with all their breathing, moaning and mass sex orgies and offend me by their unsubstantiated accusations!

unsubstantiated accusations cause death, remember!

Right well I'm applying for eco +bus with east european studies, and I havent received any information from them at all.
Well does it really matter where you go to uni? My choices are all over the country and I'd be happy at any one of them.

Ahhhh, I missed that boy. I created a thread in the Subscriber forums called 'A Thread For Paul'. It took him 1 hour to notice it (he was online the whole time) . I'm aiming to post everything there is to know about him on the web eg his blog, pictures (incl. ones I have yet to post), the lawyer's fresher's video etc...
